One of the places that seemed to have been mentioned on social media quite a bit in the past week would be pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters — they are also one of the most recent F&B operators that had moved into the Bukit Timah enclave. There isn’t a shortage of specialty coffee joints within the area that pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters is being situated in; pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters is located in the same row of shophouses where one can also find other notable F&B establishments such as Choupinette, the outlet of My Little Spanish Place at Bukit Timah, as well as Daily Ground (itself being a concept by the same folks behind Two Bakers). Flip Coffee Roasters have largely kept to an online presence until the opening of pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters — themselves being a coffee roaster retailing their beans through their online store. Their very first cafe comes full with dine-in operations; the interior being decked in a rather cosy, brightly-lit living room-style setup comprising of normal seating, communal seating as well as counter seating. The space features a large use of white brick walls against wooden flooring; all matched with furniture and fittings of wooden accents — the inclusion of plants helps to make the space feel a little livelier as well. It is no doubt that the focus at pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters would be on their specialty coffee offerings — apart from serving up a variety of espresso-based coffees and filter coffees featuring beans from various origins, they also retail the coffee beans that they have roasted via the display shelf that is stocked up at the entrance. Apart from the coffee, pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters also serve up tea sourced from Antea Social amongst other beverages; those looking for a bite can also find a line-up of toasties, bakes and a Savoury Waffle on the menu as well.

Dropping by pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters during the early afternoon on a weekend, we were intending to give some of the hot food items in the menu of pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters a go. Skimming through the various Toasties that they offer on the menu, it was the Breakfast Toasties they pretty much caught our attention whilst looking at what the item comprises. The menu mentions that the Breakfast Toasties comes with elements such as house-made Italian sausage, scrambled eggs, grape jam, tangy smoked mayo and red cheddar. As it arrives the table, we do note that the toasties at pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters are actually served as-is; this also means that there is no accompanying salads or fries that would come with the toasties. Coming in what seems to be sourdough toast, the sizes of the toasties here can be said as woke hey more substantial as compared to the same that some other establishments serve up — the bread herself was crusty and comes with a bit of tension when one tries to chew it apart, with everything else being in between the bread. Considering the composition of the elements going into the Breakfast Toasties, we felt that the Breakfast Toasties somewhat replicates the flavours that one would usually associate with the big breakfast from the Golden Arches. This was especially so given the savouriness and slight peppery note of the house-made Italian sausage, and that aptly sweet note that came from the grape jam — that in itself was a crowd-pleaser on its own; all that with fluffy scrambled eggs and stringy, melted cheese that gives it an eggy and savoury note to finish everything off. It is needless to say that this was absolutely what one would absolutely crave for as a hearty breakfast dish to be washed down with a cup of coffee at hand; one that is more premium than assembling the Big Breakfast muffin sandwich.

If anything, the folks behind pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters do seem like an earnest bunch — there is a real emphasis on coffee here considering how many different origins of beans that they have to offer for their selection of filter coffee here. Considering how they do have an interesting variety of coffee options, we gave their Filthy and Smooth Operator (White) a try; the Filthy is pocket by Flip Coffee Roaster’s rendition of the Dirty that some establishments serve up, while the Smooth Operator (White) is a bottled cold brew offering that comes with milk. While we aren’t sure on which beans are being used in both the Filthy and the Smooth Operator (White), one thing to note about the coffee that are being used in the two items are definitely on the stronger side; the Filthy was much similar to the Dopper that we once loved from the now-defunct Ristr8to at Chef Avenue (now B.E.D.) at Tai Seng — an espresso shot pulled on a chilled glass of milk with the milk being especially creamy and rich. On the other hand, the Smooth Operator (White) was a cuppa that came with a strong caffeinated punch, yet silky smooth and creamy with a light sweetness that makes it particularly easy to drink. We have also ordered the Cheesy Muffin which was one of the various bakes that were on display at the counter when we made our visit — the Cheesy Muffin was something that we would liken to be pretty similar to a herb & cheese scone; the flavour profile was definitely close, though the texture was definitely lighter, fluffier and moister, which was easier to eat. The prices of the toasties are within the range of $15 to $18, while the Savoury Waffle which features seasonal infused butter is priced at $9. Overall, the offerings at pocket by Flip Coffer Roasters certainly hit the spot; the items offered might be viewed as simple against that of what some other cafes may serve up, but they are hearty and tasty, while they seemed to be pretty knowledgeable on coffee with the execution being pretty on-point. Cafes may be aplenty in the ‘hood, but we do think that there is still room for pocket by Flip Coffee Roasters — a spot to add to the places for avid cafehoppers to visit!
