Tanjong Pagar
Don't be put off by the queue - this tendon is totally worth the wait. For only $13.90++, I was presented with an overflowing heap of scrumptious tempura atop a bowl of Japanese rice, as well as delicious chawanmushi and miso soup. The "icing on the cake" was most definitely the tantalising tendon sauce that is slightly sweet and goes beautifully with generous dashes of chilli powder. I also enjoyed helping myself to lightly pickled vegetables that balanced the heavy dish. 😋
A cross btw your traditional wan ton mee and Japanese ramen. They really take pride in their presentation so expect a longer waiting time amidst the already long queue. The noodles were springy like hk style noodles and it is seasoned in their special sauce consisting of lemongrass, garlic and oil. Their homemade Sambal Blachan though not so spicy was a good contribution to the entire umami experience. Of coz it was the half cooked egg that got me salivating. Instead of char Siew, you get a substitute of Japanese pork belly that is marinated n cooked for 36 hours in a water bath resulting in a very tender pork that melts in your mouth. Only thing I didn't really like was the fried prawn curled thing which didn't really go and was so oily. Other than that price was reasonable at $5.90 for a small bowl.
In a large bowl, there is a giant fillet of unagi, and little pockets of bean sprouts, pickled beetroot and roasted pumpkins around, topped with an onsen egg, all for $16 (net price bc there is no service charge here) One can add $2 for a serving of carbs eg. rice/quinoa($3) In the other large bowl, there is a 24 hour braised beef cheek, with baby corn, sundried tomatoes, bean sprouts and another onsen egg, all for $14 :-) this small cafe is definitely one to watch for its generous portions, tasty ingredients and lovely atmosphere. Who is up for seconds? 🙋🏼🙋🏼🙋🏼
