Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre
It’s been a while since I tried Mala Xiang Guo from a new place (have been eating from the same few places😛) and the Mala Xiang Guo ($23 for 4 pax) from驰名麻辣香锅 at Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre (#01-05) turns out to be pretty tasty and affordable!
It comes with all the usual ingredients for you to mix and match, and the 小辣 version is just nice for me. It is flavourful and savoury, and saucy enough to coat all the ingredients and go well with rice. The dinner queue on Sunday is really long though (and a little messy as they do not have a buzzer system) - so be prepared to wait during peak periods.
Why choose one when you can have the best of both worlds🌗? The Mixed Carrot Cake ($5) from Hua Ji Carrot Cake (华记菜头糕) at Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre (#01-52) consists of both black and white carrot cake. The white carrot cake is soft, thoroughly coated in egg and fried till fragrant. The black carrot cake is a tad sweet for me, but nonetheless still tasty. Not bad!
I don’t often eat porridge but the Century Egg Lean Meat Porridge ($3.50 + 70 cents for egg) from Xin Ji Congee at Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre (#01-36) is surprisingly good. The porridge is very smooth and full of flavour from the pork and century egg. The fragrance from the fried shallots and spring onion and the runny egg gives it an extra oomph - delicious!
My favourite food from Mei Ji Fishball Noodle at Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre (#01-70) is actually not their fishball noodles but their Laksa ($3.50). The laksa broth is rich, savoury and flavourful, without being too jelak. Together with a generous serving taupok, egg, fish cake and cockles, this is a very satisfying bowl of laksa.
My all-time favourite YTF (Hwa Kee Yong Tau Foo) - the ingredients are very fresh and I will always add vinegar to the chili for an extra kick😍 Sadly, the stall is no longer found after Kallang Bahru hawker centre undergone major upgrading - does anyone know where did they shifted to😢?
