Places I Won’t Come Back Again
Came here because of all the hype on social media plus the $9.90++ opening promo.
Queue was around 20mins during weekday lunch time and we tried stinky tofu as well as collagen - the two most expensive hotpot on the menu. We also separately added the fried beancurd roll for $3.80++ (3pcs)
Great that we finally have stinky tofu hotpot in Singapore but to be very honest, the taste is nowhere similar to the ones in Taiwan. It's more mala than stinky tofu I would say and the tofu itself is missing the unique fragrance that stinky tofu should have so it's a pity. Ingredients wise - it's exactly the same as their menu image, where almost everything comes in 2 qty. 2 prawns, 2 clams, 2 prawn balls.. we were lucky to have 3 pieces of beef because my family who came one day before me only found 2 slices of beef in their hotpot. There's an option to choose either pork shabu shabu or beef shabu shabu as the meat. There's 3 pieces of stinky tofu as well along with half a portion of instant noodles and a bunch of vegetables. It's comes with a mini bowl of rice too for free. Not sure if this is the portion for the promo or the original portion because I definitely would not pay $24.90++ for it. Would rather go for HDL's weekday lunch promo at $15.90 just one level below. But if it's $9.90, it's pretty worth it!
Would not recommend the collagen hotpot as well because it tasted like normal pork soup base and abit too clear to think that it contains collagen. The meat is fixed for collagen - pork shabu shabu and it comes with korean glass noodles instead of instant noodles.Portion wise is also similar to stinky tofu where it comes with 2 pieces of each ingredient (other than the veg and the fish roe.. can't believe they only gave one fish roe ball :( wish that it was 2 as well haha. It comes with a mini bowl of rice too. This is priced $23.90++ on tbe menu...
Both soup base tasted pretty instant so will probably not return again. Good to try tho for $9.90++
Tried the claypot rice the first time we came and it was pretty normal, nothing to rave about. Definitely can find better ones out there!
Came back for their other signatures because I always wanted to try San Lou Bee Hoon. It’s not too bad but pretty dry and oily. It’s not packed with ingredients like others have said but I guess can’t complain much for $5.80.
Their garlic crispy chicken was average as well but definitely not worth $12.80 for that few pieces of chicken. It’s very oily also.
Overall, definitely not worth travelling down for but at Sembawang where there’s nothing much to eat, I guess we can’t be too picky about food.
Tried all that I want to try so I definitely won’t come back again.
P.S. their chilli packs a punch though
