Founder BKT With #burpplebeyond Trying out the BKT from @founderbkt at Bugis with #burpplebeyond! Glad to say that the quality of the food turned out to be better than expected, as I tried it previously at the other outlet and felt it was only average at most then. The pork tasted fresh with no weird porky aftertaste. The soup was also peppery enough and not overly salty. The lettuce was really crisp too. The only 2 letdowns were the braised tau kee and the rice, as both were too tough IMO. I also felt the braised sauce to be too sweet. Otherwise, the BKT here is pretty worth a try! 🐷

Popularity Bak Kut Teh ($7.80) And Founder Bak Kut Teh ($9.80) Soup was peppery and hot on initial taste, and mellowed into a more rounded flavour. The meat however, was rather dry/tough, and perhaps only the spare rib in the $9.80 option & 1 piece of the other type of meat was passable. The service left much to be desired. We were v thirsty from our run, and asked for some warm water. It took a ridiculous amount of time for the water to come. We went over to check if we could just serve ourselves (the jug was just right there), and the waiter said that the water would be coming soon (but no it didn’t). And when it finally did come, they served it in a plastic cup with a plastic straw (??!!). Okay the plastic issue is something management has to look into, so can’t help that until they change their SOPs, but I can’t understand how water can take so long to be served. Honestly this place is ~okay~ but I wouldn’t come back, my first (and probably last) visit left a bad impression.

Gnocchi To Another Level This blew my mind away! Looks does not do justice to this dish! Taste better than it looks! Crunchy gnocchi with tender chicken breast meat! Love how the flavours were in this dish.

For 1-for-1 Main Dish (save ~$25) Turn to this restaurant along Bussorah Street for a Turkish feast with the gang! To start, go for the Saksuka ($8), consisting of eggplant, paprika and red tomato sauce lightly seasoned with herbs. For mains, the community can't stop raving about the Patlican Musakka ($24) – think lamb, eggplant, potato, green pepper, tomato and cheese – a super rich dish not to miss out on. Testi Kebab ($29 for 1, $48 for 2) Slow-cooked in a sealed claypot, the testi kebab here comes with lamb cubes, potato, onions, eggplant, and tomatoes. The theaterical aspect of this dish is really interesting because the claypot is broken once the fire dies off. It was done carefully so as to prevent the bits of claypot from getting into our food. It's rather wasteful that they can't re-use the claypot, but oh wells. The lamb was really tender as expected with sweet sourish sauce. The taste was kinda similar to patlican musakka without cheese, which is something I enjoy but maybe not when served one after another.

Patlican Musakka ($24) [or $15 via the Communal Dining at Kampong Glam App or FB Messenger] Lamb stew with eggplants and potato and topped with cheese, before getting baked in a claypot. Love how tender and smell-free the lamb was, and didn't know that it would go really well with tomato paste. It feels like eating lasagna without the lasagna sheets! The eggplant and potato added some healthy touch to the dish although I still dipped them in more cheese and tomato paste!

The Green Ducklings 23 Dec’18, Sun☁️ 📍The Green Ducklings - Fried Carrot Cake with Nacho Cheese🧀 - Unagi Sandwich🥪 - Flat White☕️ Fried carrot cake with nacho cheese (and shallot) is something different and didn’t expect it to go well, not bad for a try, but suggest to share as it may go jelak at the end (greasy & cheesy). Unagi sandwich is a miss in my opinion, it really depends, the bones wasn’t soft to the extent where I can consciously but still swallow them down my throat with the bread...the potato were nice though, I mean, potato can’t really fail right...=X The flat white is along medium bodied coffee, not bad... Think come once is enough... Bonus: Cafe filled with pastel / Tiffany blue colour, quite instagrammable... Damage: $18.80

Mentaiko Tiger Prawn Aglio Olio ($20) Apart from its industrial interior & extremely famous desserts & croissants from its sibling company, @brotherbird_bakehouse, @stateland_coffeehouse has a pretty exciting menu as well! My new fav would be their Mentaiko Tiger Prawn Aglio Olio ($20)! The Aglio Olio is mixed with tobiko and topped with Mentaiko sauce & additional tobiko to give you small bubbles of saltiness amidst the juicy tiger prawns & the al dente spaghetti! After a good toss & mix, each strand of spaghetti is coated perfectly with mentaiko & tobiko, without being too overpowering. Another option you can choose is the KFC & Waffle ($18). KFC aka Korean Fried Chicken, is soy glazed chicken seated atop their cinnamon scented waffle with a side of kimchi slaw to balance the sweet and savoury with a tinge of sour! Definitely a winner! Also, a special mention to their side of Fried Cauliflower! Dehydrated, battered and deep fried cauliflower is tossed in curry powder to give you that crunchy but healthy tasty veggie dish that you need! Even non-veggie lovers (like me) do fancy this dish quite a fair bit! #aroundwithamd #burpple

Ferrero and Banana Creampie Crossaints Oh, for the love of crossaints. Pre-ordered a box of these delicious bakes, and boy was I torn amongst the innovative yet exquisite flavors on display. The pastries at Brotherbird are fun, visually attractive and generous in size. They also deliver in the taste department, made flaky and crusty, but slightly less buttery than a traditional crossaint- allowing the custard fillings to claim centre stage. Of my box of 6, the banana cream pie cruffin shone as it was generously pipped to the brim with a lucious creamy banana cream ganache, which I must applaud for its balance of fruity and milky notes. The flaky pasty was the perfect medium for the subtle-tasting cream, every bite was satisfying without being overwhelmingly rich. Another of notable mention is the Ferrero Crossaint- a timeless combination of chocolate coated crossaint filled with a viscous hazelnut rocher ganache. Biting through the crispy rocher ganache dusted with gold-colored flakes, layered sweet pastry and finally the flowy-middle- these were reminisent of good-old Krispy Kreme's nutella-filled donut, turned up a notch.

Good Even On Its Own Cookie butter soft serve ($6). 6 bucks for a soft serve, what?? But trust me, so so good with the biscuit and delectable crumbs given generously in the cup. Had the soft serve with their salted egg lava mochi before but eating it on its own really brings out the flavour of the cookie butter. Shoutout to their croissants as well which my boyfriend and I are a big fan of!

Sunday Champagne Brunch The Sunday Champagne Brunch (~$148 per adult for free flow champagne) is a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon, with Taittinger Brut as the bubbly of choice here. Highlights were the self-service caviar bar, and a really fragrant yuzu cheesecake that got us going for a second slice even after stuffing ourselves with buffet mains.

Best European Buffet & Service (Dish above) Main Course: Salmon Fillet A La Plancha (Pumpkin Puree, Squash, Citrus Vinagrette) I have been to this restaurant 3 times in the past 2 months and each experience has only gotten better. Honestly, the best way to know how good this restaurant is, is by visiting it yourself. My instagram highlight @thankGodforf00d will be able to show a greater diversity of the dishes that Ash & Elm has but it only displays my 2nd and 3rd visit and the descriptions of the food cannot be properly seen for my 2nd visit.  Below is a summary of my 3 visits: 18th May - Saturday (Semi-Buffet + Main Course; $48++) 26th June - Wednesday (Semi-buffet + Main Course; $38++) 15th July - Monday (Full Buffet; $38++) Note: Full buffets occur at the discretion of the restaurant. It is priced similar to that of the Semi Buffet + Main Course (Hence, $38++ for Weekdays and $48++ for Saturdays) Overall, I have had lovely experiences at Ash & Elm and am really grateful to both the service staff and the chefs for giving me such a memorable experience. Just in case you may not have noticed, I am NOT paid for this review but I highly, highly recommend anybody that sees this to try out their semi-appetiser & dessert buffet during the weekdays. Anyways, hope to visit the restaurant again soon and perhaps I will try their Sunday Brunch ($98++) in future. :) Do check out 1) @thankGodforf00d for Highlights 2) https://thankgodjournals.blogspot.com/2019/07/ash-elm-best-european-buffet-service.html for my Full Review
