One of my favourite congees ever: lightweight, silky texture, amply populated with diced pork and century eggs. (Nothing more repulsive than close-fisted vendors unwilling to spare ingredients.) Each mouthful brings to light the depth and evenness of flavour. Perfect pick-me-up.

💭 Must try
Crispy on the outside, airy on the inside. Concealed at the core of the bread are a slice of melted cheese and smeared butter. Take it with a piping hot drink (tea or Milo) for some warm, fuzzy feels.

💭 Must try!
Not bad, but I’ve had better. The rolls were unevenly marinated (because they were served separately from the gravy) and could afford to be thinner. But I enjoyed the delicately-flavoured gravy and the tender collops of BBQ pork.

As a new entrant to the already competitive Thomson café scene, I’d say they have much to work on. This was a painfully mediocre dish. Slightly dry patty, cheap Kraft cheese, and a perplexing side of Lays (straight out turn-off). Whoever said potato crisps were tolerable substitutes for fries in a “burger and chips”?! That’s literalism of a criminal degree. Saving graces: sunny side up, black pepper seared portobello. But they’re just not enough!!! I’m struggling to find justifications for the frankly extortionate price.

💭 Just forget it
This is OK. The matcha shone and it wasn’t too sweet. But it’s easy to mistake the thin consistency for dilution, and perhaps the way forward is to pump in a little more milk. It’s a latte after all. That said, I wouldn’t seek out this place on account of its latte. The flak is not undeserved (see my other review) so it’s a no from me – at least not till they ameliorate food standards.

This platter far exceeded my expectations! (Proof that commercialised joints don’t invariably mangle roasts.) The char siew was tender and unstintingly coated with honeyed BBQ sauce. I enjoyed the lightly scorched edges, but some might want it crispier and smokier. The roast pork was equally succulent, interlaced with fat, and quickly won my heart with its brittle golden skin. I’ll be back, just for that satisfying crackle and the juicy hunks of meat.

💭 Must try
Beautifully done! The hazelnut praline dacquoise sits atop a crunchy feuilletine base, crowned by a layer of dark chocolate mousse and velvety ganache. Alone, each was wonderful; together, they made for an irresistible confluence of flavours. Slightly sweet, fleetingly salty, seductively rich. I savoured every crumb.

💭 MUST TRY!
For $5, I got briny slabs of ribs bathing in an oily broth. What little meat I could muster was tender, but fatty. The taste of black beans was palpably absent – unsurprising, since the ground beans were used only as a garnish. It’s a real pity because this dish lacks pungency and spiciness, which, really, is the essence of the attraction behind steamed pork ribs.

When it comes to prawn mee, broth is definitive of quality. This broth was lightweight and sapid, with a distinct pork flavour. What’s lacking, however, is the thick crustacean flavour quintessential of the dish. Ideal if you’re seeking healthier options, but not wholly satisfying.
FYI: If limelight is testament to quality for you, this prawn mee won the first edition of Channel 8’s 《抢摊大行动》(Buzzing Cashier) – after many gruelling rounds of taste tests.

💭 Try if you’re on a diet
What to expect: delightful medium-rare patty, truffle shrooms and strings of caramelised onions topped amply with cheese & mayo. Served with a side of shoestring fries which were piping hot and crispy on the first bite. Nothing flamboyant, but just right for a decadent meal. I know people have complained of dryness and gristliness in the patty, but thankfully mine suffered no such afflictions. The rocket was a bad idea though.

💭 Try at least once!
Japanese rice bowls are all the rage now and Donya’s here to tickle your fancy. The salmon was grilled to tender perfection and carpeted with a layer of torched mentaiko sauce. The pollock roe (a tinge of salt, fishiness and the ocean) stands out starkly from the mayo, just enough but not overpowering. If I had any gripe at all, it’s merely that the miso soup and the teriyaki sauce coating the rice are a tad salty.

💭 Definitely a donburi staple
What to expect: hazelnut chocolate soft serve base crowned by chewy biscuit crumbs and a drizzle of Nutella. I’m ambivalent. It’s respectably chocolatey but it’s too sweet. You can literally feel the deluge of sugar dissolve on your tongue. Flavour wise, this is only pedestrian: comparable to a run-of-the-mill supermarket chocolate ice-cream.
