Heard about the new Egg Tarts by Tung Patisserie that is situated within the Telok Ayer 121 Coffee Shop and decided to drop by to check them out. Situated within the coffeeshop where the space was previously dedicated to part of the main dining area, it is quite impossible to miss Egg Tarts by Tung Patisserie — the stall faces the intersection of Telok Ayer Street and McCallum Street, with posters illustrating the egg tarts facing both streets; the stall also has a prominent signboard that faces McCallum Street as well. There is only one single item being sold at Egg Tarts by Tung Patisserie — these would be their Signature Egg Tarts that are sold in either boxes or two or boxes of six; no other items are being sold, though collection of cake orders, pastries and egg tarts are still available at their original shop space that is meant for collections only at Dairy Farm Estate.
Going straight for their Signature Egg Tarts since this is the only item available in their outlet at Telok Ayer 121 Coffee Shop, we went for the box of two; the box being priced at $5.60. First look and one can see how these are made almost similar to that of Portuguese-style Egg Tarts; one can also easily notice how the Signature Egg Tart comes with the pastry crust over here. We note that the crust here is pretty much as flaky as it seems — definitely crisp but they do seem to also be a little greasy considering how they are being picked off the shelf having totally cooled down to room temperature; these would have been better if they were served piping hot since the pastry would not have soaked up the grease. That being said, we did like the egg custard that came with these; the egg custard does seem to be a little bit on the sweeter side for some, but they were definitely jiggly and still soft — almost in a molten state, and is actually held up pretty well by the pastry crust itself.
It is a pretty daring move for Egg Tarts by Tung Patisserie to actually make that bold move to dedicate an entire stall to sell egg tarts — while the egg tarts can be said as a little pricey to some considering how a box of two does cost within the range of what could be an average meal for lunch, we do find that it does come with quite a respectable level of quality. No doubt that dole refinements may be necessary — especially that of the greasiness of the crust in general, but I guess this is something that the folks behind Egg Tarts by Tung Patisserie would be looking into considering how most of its patrons are likely to do takeaways at this location. An egg tart that is worthy to try out if around the area!
