When I came across this food stall in the coffee shop at Foch Road, I was pleasantly delighted with the sight of young hawkers who try to deliver Japanese food fare to hawker food place. For a Japanese food that is presented in quite a restaurant way, I feel that marking prices below ten dollars is somewhat affordable in relation to Japanese donburi.
The Salted Egg Tempura Don (S$9.80) was clearly a twist from the popular Tempura Don with the additional touch of melt-in-your-mouth salted egg yolk powder. Unfortunately, the powder itself lacks the omph of salted egg, thus the taste is considered as weak for me. On a side note, the dip sauce that was provided for me, which I initially thought was salted egg yolk sauce, turns out to be a curry sauce (think McDonald's).
Still, I'd say that if the young hawkerpreneurs were to take general feedback seriously and tweak their ingredients to customers' liking, there is still a future for our local hawker scene. We shall see.
