Today's takeout packed in true Japanese compact style: sesame seed-littered rice nearly completely hidden by generous ribbons of shabu shabu beef, with pickled cucumber, edamame and half a soft-centred egg on the side – and don't forget that bowl of warm stew teeming with slices of carrot and radish.

The beef, simmered in a leek and onion broth, was simple but tasty, its gravy seeping into the bed of rice beneath. Overall a wholesome, satisfying lunch that was just what I was looking for this rainy afternoon. And just check out that adorable wooden spoon...I couldn't bear to use it!
