Unexpectedly Good and Cheap Food
I am going to be oddly specific on how to experience a great bowl.
First, order number 2 with dry mee kia with chili and vinegar. The mee pok isn't as nice while the added prawns play a key role in elevating flavour later.
Second, take a small plate of black vinegar along with your tray.
Third, break the prawn head from the prawn and put it in the soup, slightly smash the prawn head.
Fourth, smash some of the pork lard to draw the oil out. Combine the oil, soup and the vinegar and mix the noodles.
Lastly, enjoy!
The mee kia is often AL DENTE (1 Q). The prawns are succulent (2 Q). The braised mushrooms are umami and bouncy (3 Q).
It's a QQQuality bowl of BCM. The bak chor and clams make no diff.
The BCM without these steps is above average, but with these little adjustments, will elevate it.
This was one of the most complex bowl of Phos I've had; the soup was souper flavourful. For $5 it's fantastic, I'm not even going to talk about the egg chiffon (add-on), the texture of the bouncy meatball and the nicely blanched beef slices. The soup had the taste of a mixture of spices that felt really heart warming, think ? cardamom, star anise and maybe cinnamon? but the taste of the beef still comes through. It was so good, I bought 3 more bowls home for my family, although it didn't taste as nice as when I had it there.
Side note: it's also halal!
I had the all in MHK ($5.50). The surprise was there was a wok hei taste, which I'm guessing is from the aroma oil but unsure how's that possible. The soup tasted porky and umami. The mhk was slightly thin but had a nice chewy doughy texture, that perhaps hint of the gluten developed in the dough that was used. The pork slices and meat were cooked nicely. The egg was runny.
After eating for a while, I felt like I needed some vinegar to cut through the richness of the soup and oil, looking for a braised mushroom or a sourish chili. The prawn and pork balls were unique but nothing to shout about.
Its a really unique bowl of mhk and there was a deliberate thought process. I do think there is room for improvement but the noodles and soup are exceptional. 4.5/5!
Fish maw and mushroom soup ($5.50) was a simple heartilicious bowl to have after a Vietnam of phos and ca phe. The Uncle told me this was not an staple of the menu so...good luck?
Margherita ($5.90)
Was on bus 10 on my way home after exams. Stomach grumbles. Alighted. Pizzas had 2 sizes - 7 or 10 inch. To know if a pizza is done well, always go for the margherita. Nice thin crust, awesome mix of chewy and baked cheese but tomato sauce was a bit thin. Prices here are affordable (mostly below $10). Unexpected and good find.
