Fishball Noodles / Bak Chor Mee

Still the same great taste with soup that can stand as its own meal.
The noodles were coated with generous helping of base sauce of lard and special chilli paste. All the mushrooms and crispy pork lard elevated the taste even more!

This time around I had the seafood soup with a lot of contents - fishballs, fish dumplings, pork meatballs, pork liver, prawn, abalone, and of course what's bak chor mee without bak chor (minced meat)?? All the ingredients were superb. My friend was raving about the fresh tasty prawns. I liked the smooth, sweetish abalone as well as the fishballs.

I was also offered a pint of beer to accompany the meal and I went with the recommendation of Suntory Black. It was smooth and not bitter; perfect companion to the rich noodles and soup.

It's near to where I have my weekly German lessons but the opening times just don't tally with my lesson times. One day I was in the area well during their opening times so I wasted no time getting a bowl. It's obvious that I normally like "dry" noodles drenched with sauce, not so much soupy noodles. I basically like that hit of flavour when I scoop the noodles into my mouth. This place only has soupy version, but I couldn't complain at all! The broth is the bomb. Thick, cloudy, flavourful, and made even better with the sprinkling of lots and lots of garlic chips as well as crispy pork lard. The noodles were a bit thin, but that was probably intentional? The noodles did go well with the thicker broth, without them being too doughy. Overall a really great bowl to have, so fulfilling and satisfying!

Such is the case for this fishball noodles meal from Ah Ter. The bowl of noodles with lard+chilli base= fantastic. The soup with all the yummy toppings= fantastic. Each bowl can truly be a meal on their own! I just regret that I didn't get the option with fish dumplings since that's my favourite part of fishball noodles. Would be back to try other options!

Was coincidentally in Suntec area that day so I promptly made my way. What I noticed was the pleasant mushroom taste. I'm not usually a fan of mushrooms and their aftertaste but somehow this place managed to just extract the yummy part of mushroom taste without the aftertaste that I hate. Soup (not in picture) was cloudy thick and had mushroom taste as well. The noodles were coated with fragrant oil - but not too much. It was just nice. Overall the full-bodied flavour of this noodle bowl lingered pleasantly and was definitely a delight to have.

Overall really good bowl. Sauce was great and chilli was punchy. Noodles were coated nicely and all the toppings were decent. Special shout out to their really tasty soup which also had a lot of cilantro put in which I luuuurve. Now I know not everyone likes cilantro, but to me it was such a refreshing layer on top of the rich noodles.
So many more stalls to try!

I started this account only a few months back and I have been back to Song Kee so many times. The visit before this I tried it with kway teow and it didn't go so well for me 😂 This visit, I tried mee kia (thin noodles) instead, even after boldly declaring that I'll only ask for mee pok for the rest of my visits. Curiosity got the better of me. I think mee kia went well with the awesome sauce, I just got more of the sauce per scoop. And of course for the toppings they are the best. Fishballs, fish dumplings, fish paste.. All fresh and super yummy.
Shall I try it with bee hoon next? Or mee tai mak?

This stall is quite ubiquitous around the island l, they're usually a staple in Food Republic outlets. For a "chain" stall they are very decent. The base sauce was very thick. It had this strong tomato/ketchup taste paired with lard and punchy chilli.
Fishballs bouncy, but maybe a bit too chewy if that's a thing. Fish dumplings decent but couldn't hold a candle to Song Kee's. The fish cakes were a bit too greasy paired with the already greasy noodles. All in all very decent attempt and easy to reach since very ubiquitous!

So punchy, so yummy. What magic was that?? The noodles were firmer than what I'm used to but I liked it! Such a good bite! They were also coated really well with the sauce. Unfortunately when I came they already ran out of fishballs but they did give me some other extra ingredients to make up for it including the really unique orangey prawn cakes (I think they're prawn cakes.. Someone correct me please if I'm wrong??).
They gave a sprinkling of crispy fried lard and fried garlic on top and that was just the clincher. Such oomph! Such aroma!

I was so excited to try it out as I had been looking for good fuzhou fishballs (fishballs with minced meat inside). The stall usually serves it in soup but I found out that they have noodles too. Usually I'd pick mee pok (wide noodles) for fishball noodles but the uncle informed me that the mee kia (thin noodles) was the traditional choice.
Overall I had a really enjoyable meal. Noodles were great with great sauce. Love the fried shallots, those always give such pleasant taste and fragrance. Of course the fishballs were excellent, bursting with flavour. The meat dumplings, I haven't really had something like them before. They tasted great though, and probably were a little like siew mai?
All in all really good and I'd love to try more combinations. With minced meat for instance.

On second thought it was probably not the best idea 😅 Kway teow by nature is very soft, which is why I think it's good when it's fried - it will firm up while absorbing sauce. But since this was just boiled kway teow drenched in sauce it was just a soft slippery blob. 😂
Still very tasty and spicy sauce though! It was good to slurp the soft kway teow covered with sauce. And their really tasty toppings, wow. Show me better fish dumplings than this place's!

Looked like a new stall. I can never keep up with the stalls at Old Airport Road Food Centre!
It reminds me of the Yan Kee mee sua. Very similar but I definitely like this one better. It's less strong/salty than the Yan Kee one. Also quite vinegary so that's probably not for everyone.. Chilli was nice, tasty and fresh. Not sure if the fishballs and meatballs were handmade, but they were decent anyway. They also had many many other options, so I foresee coming back to try them all.
