Had been following the folks behind Old Street Cafe 老街咖啡店 on social media before the opening of their cafe — these folks are opened by the same folks behind KL Traditional Chilli Ban Mee that had most recently consolidated its locations at Toa Payoh and Bidadari Park in order to centralise their operations at Old Street Cafe that is located at MacPherson Road. Old Street Cafe is located at 548 MacPherson Road — they have taken over the former premises of the now-defunct Pestle & Mortar Society. Now being an establishment more aligned towards that of a Nanyang Kopitiam-style eatery, the menu is segmented into sections dedicated to Toast, KL Traditional Chilli Ban Mee, Soup, Traditional Nanyang dishes and Side Dishes.
We were most impressed with the Kaya and Butter Toast Set amongst the other new dishes that we had tried — one thing that is fairly interesting about the Kaya and Butter Toast that Old Street Cafe serves up is the use of white toast rather than brown sugar toast that is grilled to a crisp with a beautiful brown hue and also comes complete with grill marks on the bread; the texture of the bread being nothing too different from the thin bread and crisp brown sugar toast that Ya Kun Kaya Toast uses. The use of their very own Hainanese-style Kaya that comes in a brown hue adds on to the uniqueness of the Kaya and Butter Toast here also adds a caramel-esque sweetness to the coconut jam, switching things up with the usual Nonya Kaya that most establishments seem to prefer that comes with a hint of Pandan fragrance instead. The slab of butter was also well-sized providing the Kaya and Butter Toast with a slight saltishness to balance things out against the Hainanese-style Kaya.
