Inside Scoop
An oldie but goodie 馃い Being around for some 4-5 years now says heaps, considering the volatility and high turnover rates of local cafes; and that @therefinerysg鈥檚 signature Refinery Gyudon鈥檚 been on the menu since day 1 shows just how reliably good this is. Each grain bowl comes topped with truffle shimeji mushrooms, tare marinated beef, pickled daikon, garlic chips, and an onsen egg. Very simple ingredients, with flavours and textures that balances out, it鈥檚 essentially a more modern take on the classic time-proven gyudon. If anything I found the rare sauce a wee sweeter than I鈥檇 prefer, but really there isn鈥檛 much to pick on with this grain bowl.

[The Refinery] - The seasonal special of the month is Cold Dip Tom Yum Udon ($16). It features cold Japanese Inaniwa udon with crab meat, ebi and enoki tempura, served with Tom Yum consomm茅. Reminiscent of Korean's cold noodles Naengmyeon, the chilled Tom Yum Consomm茅 was piquant and pretty intense in flavours despite its seemingly light consistency, but not too assertive, which paired well with the thin Inaniwa udon. [The Refinery] - Iced Coffee Ball. Available in 2 flavours - Macadamia or Praline, it can be a little sweet, but I thought it serves well as a post-meal drink. Always Something New As Orh Gao rotates their beers weekly & it *has* been a while since I was last here, the 10 beers on their menu were mostly new to me. 1 of them was even sold out (wow). The ones that left the most lasting impression on me: Rum on the Rye Sea Monster by Ballast Point, an Imperial Stout (rOyaLtY~) that is intense, flavourful, & solid gold. Aged in Woodford Rye & Caribbean Rum Barrels, it has a subtle sweetness with candied spice, vanilla & chocolate notes. Goes down smooth & velvety, a good one to end the night with. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the Zeffer Cider's Apple Crumble Cider as well. I have never taken to ciders, finding them too sweet. But this one smells like freaking apple crumble, & tastes like it too. Very refreshing & goes well with desserts. Thanks Sam & Orh Gao Taproom for the hospitality, & Burpple for the invite! 馃挄 馃挸 Accepts credit cards 馃尙 Air-conditioned seats available 鈽 Al fresco seats available 馃枼 Accepts reservations on Hungrygowhere 馃嵔 Burpple Beyond partner 馃檵馃徎鈥嶁檧锔 Service charge applicable 馃毇 No GST

Burnt Cheesecake (SGD $7.50) @ The Kins鈥 Specialty Coffee. Done Basque style, hailing from the region bordering France and Spain. . The difference lies in the texture; wobbly and creamy smooth on the inside, soft and spongy dense on the outside, with a slightly crisp burnt crust. . Served with sweetened whipped cream on the side, it's like a cross between a cheesecake, a cr猫me br没l茅e, and a custard pudding. . Has a delicate smoky cheesy sweet milky flavour. Yum. . . . Gochujang Grilled Chicken (SGD $16) @ The Kins鈥 Specialty Coffee. This visually colourful, house signature dish, is delicious. . The large, juicy, tender chicken thigh is marinated in gochujang / fermented red chili paste, giving it a beautiful sweet savoury spicy shrimpy flavour. . Grilled till it takes on a smoky aroma, it's served over creamy avocado guacamole, which has good vegetal earthy sweet flavour. . Paired with a side of crunchy kimchi baechu / kimchi pickled cabbage, which complements with its vegetal sour sweet flavour; and crisp thick cut potato fries, with salty starchy potato flavour. . Delicious, I enjoyed every bite. . . . The Kins鈥 Specialty Coffee More details in profile & blog
