Located at Whampoa Drive Market Food Centre, this new hawker stall, run by a very young enterprising couple, serves up birthday meesua which their Henghua grandma used to cook for the entire household. I am always curious to try out traditional family recipe and I am happy that they have taken the bold plunge to share it. The soup is clean and robust, and you can certainly taste the many hours that are put into simmering the bones. One look at the uneven width of the noodles and you can tell that it is handmade. And if you hadn't notice, each bowl comes with a very generous portion of ingredients. I got the $6 bowl which had clams, minced pork, sliced egg, abalones, braised mushrooms and braised pork belly. Felt like my birthday with this bowl of homely, comforting, msg free meesua. Do note that they are only opened during dinner time as it takes a long time to prepare (and young people can't wake up early). Most stalls here open at night and you can also grab some satays and sambal stingrays to go with this!
Crispy fried chicken chunks that were flavourful and easy to eat. The waffle came looking impressive - tall and well browned, and indeed it was crispy outside, fluffy inside. The batter is on the sweet side, closer in taste to pancakes. Douse the maple syrup for added sweetness though I find the waffle to be good enough on its own.
The steak was pretty good, nice charred taste and tender enough such that you can use a butter knife to cut. Good brown/black pepper sauce as well. Steak is quite thin so don't expect your preferred doneness. Reasonable price of $14. Absolutely recommend changing the fries to the creamy and smooth mash potato, then get a salted egg cereal fries ($4.50) to share!
Featuring an assortment of seafood. Includes 4 tempura prawns and salmon croquettes. I loved the crunchy tempura prawns! Yoshinoya is definitely killing it with the new menu at Junction 8!
The slab of teriyaki salmon was moist and flaky. And you get a bit of fried goodness with the salmon croquettes. No such thing as too much salmon for me.
So many large chunks of juicy and tender teriyaki chicken! Mix in the seaweed for a bit of umami in every bite. I think what made it perfect was the perfectly cooked onsen egg.
Huge slab of chicken that was crispy outside and succulent inside! The tonkatsu sauce is placed in a separate bowl so the chicken stays crispy! I love the salty, peppery mushrooms and the tamago!
Mix of Saba (I think) and salmon, the way to eat it is to mix everything together and put in some wasabi! Looks dry, but the fish was surprisingly moist. The most expensive item at $10.90 on the new menu but you get a lot of fish!
Words can't express my disappointment upon finding out that they ran out of fresh wasabi (after asking the staff when this was served). The Hitsumabushi set ($26.80++) comes with a light and savoury dashi that you can enjoy with the unagi and rice. I would strongly suggest checking if they have fresh wasabi in stock before ordering (unless you're cool with low quality paste wasabi as a substitute). Thankfully, the unagi was perfect. Nice smokey grilled taste with a crisp skin!
As a lover of coconut ice cream, I feel embarrassed not knowing that froco has been missing my whole life! Super light and refreshing, froyos and coconut ice creams everywhere can take a backseat. The only downer was probably the wooden spoon, which feels like sandpaper on the tongue.
Torched marshmallow fluff, frozen yogurt and Oreo crumbs. Could be better with a bigger portion of froyo. I personally preferred the honey/graham cracker one (more expensive) over the Oreo. Would I come here specially for this? Definitely not.
The beef noodle was good, with a spicy and savoury beef broth and firm noodles. Bamboo shoots were cleaned and cooked well. Dan dan noodles (dry) was quite okay, but the small bowl of soup was stellar! Also tried the fried rice which was bland. The Xiao long baos were pretty disappointing. The skin was too thick at the top, very little soup inside with mushy minced meat. Had a few other forgettable dishes as well. I would recommend just getting the noodles here.
