From the Burpple community

I’m actually shocked when I saw the price on the signage, they still keep the price very affordable today starting form just $3.50 for this plate of pork chop curry rice.

Yet, they didn’t compromise the portion at all. I still find it very generous with the amount of ingredients.

So enjoyable eating the curry rice, spicy and flavourful. The set comes with the pork chop, veggie and fried egg.

Really thankful to them for continuing providing such affordable food to the community here.

Having made quite a number of trips to Golden Mile Food Centre of the late, one stall that we had been wanting to make a visit would be Golden Mile Curry Rice. Hainanese-style curry rice had made quite a comeback in recent years; possibly due to the expansion of Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice with the opening of its new outlet at VivoCity and relocated outlet at Upper Thomson Road, as well as the opening of various new brand names such as that of Choo’s Curry Rice and Kim’s Curry Hainan which we have explored rather recently. Golden Mile Curry Rice has been in existence for quite a while; the stall which it occupies faces Beach Road on the first floor (i.e. upper level) of the food centre. They are also immediate neighbours of Oyster Bay — a new addition to the food centre which serves up Oyster Cakes. Just like most stalls serving up Hainanese-style Curry Rice, Golden Mile Curry Rice serves up rice sets such as the Curry Chicken Rice Set, Braised Pork Rice Set etc., whilst also offering patrons an option to mix-and-match their desired dishes for a plate unique to their own preferences as well.

Observing how the folks behind the counter work, the guy behind the counter picks up the various dishes as instructed by the patrons or as per the rice set being ordered; this would be before he generously splashes one type of curry atop everything on the plate, and then splashing the braised sauce before plating it off with yet another splash of curry, though this time from the curry chicken. Needless to say, the Hainanese-style Curry Rice here bears an aesthetic that is close to what most other stalls serving the same would look like as well — that ugly-delicious look that makes Hainanese-style Curry Rice so sinful as opposed to the one served at Choo’s Curry Rice that looks pretty near in comparison.

We opted for the Pork Chop Rice Set — the Pork Chop Rice Set comprising of a rice, fried pork chop, curry vegetables and a fried egg; all that whilst splashed with curry gravy and braised sauce. Digging into the the Pork Chop Rice Set, we went for the Pork Chop first — the deep-fried pork chop comes with a golden-brown fried batter featuring Panko bread crumbs; crisp on the outside, the fried pork chop was sufficiently tenderised making it easy to chew through and was carried a good bite without being too dry. The fried pork chop also didn’t carry any undesirable porky stench nor felt greasy either. Meanwhile, we found that the inclusion of curry vegetables was an interesting addition, considering how most of such establishments would have served up some form of braised vegetables instead — texturally it does match up to that of most well-executed braised vegetables out there, carrying a soft crunch though the use of curry vegetables further enhances the dish here; quite a smart move in our opinion. The sunny-side-up was decent; whilst missing of the molten egg yolk that would have made it a crowd pleaser, we still liked how it did not come with a stench of overused oil which keeps the flavours pretty clean here. With the curry gravy and braised sauce going right above all the elements, we found the curry gravy to be especially rich and thick here, but is also toned down appropriately to allow one to taste the other elements on the plate — all that so as to make the Hainanese-style Curry Rice feel too heavy on the palate here. It is also noted that the curry gravy here seems to emphasise on the flavours of curry more than being one that comes with a spiciness to tickle the tastebuds — pretty much what we would expect out of a plate of Hainanese-style Curry Rice, which makes it suitable for those who have a low tolerance to spiciness.

Now that we have finally given Golden Mile Curry Rice a go, it is little surprise how Golden Mile Curry Rice seems to be able to garner a queue for their Hainanese-style Curry Rice whenever we visit Golden Mile Food Centre for lunch on a weekday — the queue mainly comprising of office workers from the area, though there would be patrons of other demographics being mixed in the queue as well usually. Golden Mile Curry Rice seems to be able to deliver with their take on Hainanese-style Curry Rice — one which we would think is pretty authentic and rather well-executed; probably one of the better ones that one can find around that is bound to be able to satisfy cravings. Another noteworthy point here is how affordable the rice sets at Golden Mile Curry Rice are — as a matter of fact, most of their rice sets are priced at $3.50; the only exceptions to this would be the Curry Chicken Rice Set priced at $4, as well as the Fried Fish Rice Set that is listed at $5. This makes them especially wallet-friendly, considering they do provide quite a large serving of rice alongside a reasonable portion of other dishes — all that with generous splashes of curry gravy and braised sauce that makes it a simple, yet filling meal to go for. No doubt we had enjoyed the Pork Cutlet Rice Set, though we would probably go for the Braised Pork Rice Set a go the next time we decide to join in the queue at Golden Mile Curry Rice — definitely would like to see how their braised pork would go considering that the Braised Pork Rice Set is typically our order at any stall serving up Hainanese-style Curry Rice!
