Food for the sick // Flu season is back, so is my love for Teochew Porridge. Damage was $17 for all in picture (Sotong was $8, but it was cooked just right). Not in the picture, ordered a small plate of cabbage for $1 and it was cooked soft and full of flavour.

The tender meat braised in dark soya sauce was redolent with the subtle hint of aromatics such as star anise and cinnamon. Went perfectly with the braised peanuts and tau pok we also ordered.

Taste: 3.5/5

On a particularly overcast and windy evening, we developed a rare and unusual hankering for Teochew Porridge. The food at this stall in our neighbourhood coffeeshop always looked enticing whenever we passed by, so off we went to check it out.

Choose from a wide range of ingredients such as varieties of fresh fish and prawns cooked to order, braised pork belly, duck, pickled mustard greens, chap chye, fish cake, braised egg, etc. I spent a good 5 minutes just trying to make up my mind.

We ordered braised duck, salted egg, chap chye, juicy tau pok, braised peanuts with intestine and Teochew style fishcake for a grand total of $18 for two people. The flavours were simple yet satisfyingly tasty, and everything was well cooked. One of the things I enjoy about Teochew porridge is picking at a little of everything and combining it with a spoonful of porridge mixed with the sauces of multiple dishes.

Rustic, hearty, soul soothing fare that warms the heart as well as the belly.

Some say this eastern part is ulu and out of the way. Do they know it is walking distance to kembangan mrt or just minutes away to town?? Definition of out of the way is no mrt at your doorstep. Hmmm....

Anyways, this porridge place in an old kopitiam is rather popular with many. Smacked in the heart of Frankel ave amidst the terrace houses, big and small. Teochew porridge for a lazy lunch is comforting. The squid is super delish. No seasoning just plainly steamed or boiled and dip in the fiery chilli. Next best was the haebeehiam. Not grainy but soft like a paste. This was so good when eaten with the porridge. And of course any meats braised is a perfect unison between black and white.

My kinda take it slow, stress free, lazy lunch. And yes.... this is #inmybackyard #notulu and the peaceful surroundings is priceless.
