Enchanting Hoi An
The good thing about Morning Glory is their extensive menu. You can eat all kinds of Vietnamese street food here and also order dishes for a complete meal. I learned something about pho. During the times when it was hard for the Vietnamese people and food was scarce and had to be rationed, mothers had to make do to feed their families. A lot of them boiled roasted beef bones to make the soup so that their families have a hint of "meat" in their meal.
It's interesting to note so many similarities with Chinese cuisine.
Morning Glory served a fantastic version of it. This cold vermicelli rice bowl is popular all over Vietnam except in Hanoi where they have a slightly different version called Bun Cha.
I must say Morning Glory's version was it was underwhelming. I had high hopes and was tad disappointed. Thankfully, my next bowl in the local market at Ms Ha's was really good.
I really love these crispy Vietnamese pancakes. It's so hard to find good ones in Singapore so naturally I will order them when I am in Vietnam.

They are kind of addictive and the kids kept munching at them.

Tossed with the right amount of dressing and topped with shrimp, dried coconut flesh, toasted sesame, shallots and herbs, it was so refreshing. Had to resist hoarding the whole dish to myself
One of the things I love about Vietnamese cuisine is the salads. With the abundance of fresh herbs and their amazing dressings, it's the perfect starter for any meal, especially for hot, balmy June evenings. We started our dinner with beef salad which was amazing.
For some of them, you top with shredded pork floss and deep fried shallots and others, a tasty shrimp paste. So good that I went back for seconds. If not for our cooking class, I would have had a third helping.
You can't imagine our delight when we saw what the large steamer contained! Rice cakes, dumplings and more steamed rice cakes wrapped in banana leaves.

The best part about staying near the ancient town of Hoi An is that you can tapau or buy back and enjoy your street snacks in the comfort of your villas. I even bought some of the smackingly good lime Chilli which they serve in the shop from the Central Market so that I can have it with my banh mi.
