Think we remember the broth of this bowl to be more flavourful when we first had it at their Plaza Sing outlet, but still enjoyed it here. Their bun rieu broth has a lighter consistency and came with quite a variety of ingredients - mixed crab ball, pork rib, shrimp, tofu and tomato. A pity the ball and pork rib were a tad dry, but the comforting savoury broth made up for it. Liked that the tomato didn’t overpower the broth, though we wouldn’t complain if the crab component was a touch stronger.

Thought this was a little bit pricey for the portion and ingredients in the soup - mostly shredded chicken, with bits of shrimp, crab meat and quail eggs.

Something new on the menu, these mini steamed tapioca dumplings had minced pork and shrimp wrapped in, served with their sweet fish sauce. You can request for them to come spicy or not.

I’ve had their Bánh Nậm - Vietnamese Flat Dumpling (3 for $6.90) before at the Plaza Sing outlet. These 2 dishes are almost the same, but the flat dumplings are otah-shaped and bigger sized. I’m a huge fan of chewy textured food and the texture here was great, but a pity that these mini ones had very little filling. The latter had a better ratio, hence found it more enjoyable!

Really enjoyed our meals at Cô Chung’s original outlet in Plaza Sing, but was quite disappointed with the food here at their new Boat Quay outlet. Not sure if it was an off day when we visited, but they’re still pretty new. Hopefully they work out and make the necessary tweaks. Vibes, atmosphere and service were great though, it was a good spot for catch up with friends!

One of the mains we had was the Vietnamese Broken Rice - came with marinated grilled pork, egg meatloaf and sunny side up on broken rice, with a side of fish sauce. The meats were unfortunately quite dry and tough, though we did like the marination. Would also preferred for it to be served a little hotter.

Thought their Salted Chilli Prawn ($3.36 each, min 2) skewers sounded very interesting, but they were sold out, so we went with The Chicken Tender ($1.60 each, min 2) and Mixed Pork ($1.70 each, min 2) instead. They also have Beef Tender ($1.90 each, min 2) available. Was disappointed in these though, as both could be much less tough and dry. The marination itself wasn’t too bad but pretty average for its price.

Back again at TONKIN! We’ve made it a point to get something new each time, and this round it was the Spicy Seafood Vermicelli. For the price, we didn’t expect to be served with a variety of prawns, scallops and cuttlefish! Wouldn’t say they were the freshest, but they were very commendable for its price point. The appetising sweet-savoury broth packed a good heat, while the vermicelli has a good bite. Will be getting this again next time!

Can’t say this enough but we’ve always enjoyed this underrated spot, and hope more people try them out. It’s value for money on its original price tag - even more so if you’re on Burpple Beyond as they have their mains for one-for-one.

For this bowl, we went with the homemade spicy soup as base and picked the mi xian with double bursting fishballs. It comes with vinegar added, but you can request to separate them. While this broth packed quite a heat, I still prefer the superior soup for its depth of flavour. Honestly wasn’t expecting much of these fishballs, but they were generously filled with savoury fishroe. Mi xian was like in our other bowl - good textured and smooth. Just thought it was a teeny bit pricey.

We enjoyed TONKIN’s well-balanced rendition of this Vietnamese dish. Instead of the usual thicker consistency, the broth is lighter yet still flavourful. Most importantly for me, the broth is not overpowered by tomatoes and you get a distinct crab sweetness. There’s lots of toppings to go along - beancurd, tomatoes, chicken ham and blue crab egg cakes. Was a filling bowl!

Also, if you’re dining with a friend, don’t forget the incredibly value for money Burpple Beyond deal here for 1 for 1 mains!

Back again at TONKIN! Got the same bowl of Pho Ga as the flavourful and comforting bowl left a really good impression the other time. Happy that the broth is as good and unlike the usual shredded chicken pieces that are tougher, we especially liked the tender slices used here. Also discovered that they have an ala-carte buffet option that’s going for just $19.90 - it includes all the food items (excluding desserts) in mini and regular portions! We’ll definitely give that a go the next time we’re back.

On top of the very reasonable prices, you can use your Burpple Beyond here for the mains!

Fried chicken wings with vermicelli salad. This was served in a generous portion, but we would have liked a punchier accompanying sauce for the noodles. Chicken wings were crispy but a teeny bit dry. Would recommend their Pho Ga ($7.80) over this!

PS. TONKIN is available on Burpple Beyond for their mains and it’s a steal!

We ordered the Bun Canh Ga ($7.80) and this Pho Ga with Burpple Beyond - sooo worth it! Was super pleasantly surprised by the flavourful and comforting broth in this bowl. Sweetness of the chicken in the broth was distinct and we liked how tender the chicken slices were. Although our orders took a little longer, service was friendly and the space was great to chill in. Will be back to try their other items!
