A Halal botanical inspired gelato shop, Momolato is no stranger to the Haji Lane area. I've been wanting to try Momolato for a while now - way back when they were selling popsicles over at SMU.

Momolato is known for their keto diet friendly options - which means no sugar - which means less sweet. (Oh dear, oh dear.)

The scent of their waffles permeated their little cafe and I got eager to try while queuing outside - to the point that I totally missed their croffles on their menu. Decided to be a little fancy and went with their Pandan waffles, paired with two scoops of ice-cream - Himalayan Osmanthus Passionfruit Mango & Onde Onde Yellow Sweet Potato.

Damn it all sounds so fancy doesn't it. Unfortunately, it was all loss in the taste. The Pandan waffle was a bright green hue that made me apprehensive when I saw it on the waffle iron; sadly it smelled and tasted artificial in the end. The saving grace was their salted caramel sauce that came with it.

Gelato-wise, the osmanthus was lacking in the gelato, being overpowered by the passionfruit while the Onde Onde (which I had high hopes for as I love everything ondeh ondeh) was also lacking in sweetness and flavour. The texture of it also seemed more buttery than creamy.

I do chalk it up to perhaps my own bad choices and if only we could taste test the gelatos prior to ordering like how it was back when the world was normal. I guess the whole keto fad isn't for me, though I'll definitely like to give Momolato another shot and try their other flavours. And maybe their croffles to boot. They're also the only ice-cream shop over at Haji Lane that stays open till late.

My friend and I initially came here for their croffles but to our dismay, they were sold out for the day :( In their defense, we came pretty late, close 5pm so maybe that's why! Their waffles were nice, crunchy outside and soft inside but nothing much to shout about. However, the waffles came with a serving of whipped cream and a sweet unidentifiable sauce which was delightful :D We got the Korean Strawberry Shortcake (keto friendly so + $2.5) and a Blue Pea Hokkaido Milk Creme Brulee gelato! To be honest the KR strawberry one was pretty weird... the texture was the strangest to us because it felt like yoghurt x icecream but diluted ??? the flavour was pretty weird too but it's keto so... BUT the blue pea one was GREAT!! it was so creamy and not too sweet, it was really pleasant and we liked it a lot :)

A great spot for dessert lovers and night-goers, the café is opened till beyond dinner hours, closing at 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. With over 18 unique gelato flavours that changes on a weekly basis, Momolato Café offers flavours that are suitable for individuals on the keto diet, signature or premium for the rest of us, with a price range of $4.90 to $8. Besides just enjoying the gelato on its own, you can have it in a pandan leaf-wrapped cone or on top of waffles or croffles. The gelatos are made with natural and seasonal ingredients, sourced from different countries around the world, without any added additives or artificial flavourings. These unique flavour fusions come in the form of Kochi Yuzu Shiso from Japan, Chocolate Arabic Coffee from Ecuador, Roasted Sicilian Pistachio and the Asian favourites of Mao Shan Wang durian, Oolong Houjicha Tiramisu and Ondeh-Ondeh Sweet Potato Swirl.

There are also blended options available, with a range of keto, sugar-free, diabetic-friendly smoothies such as Mango Yogurt Pomelo, Avocado Coconut or Strawberry Cheesecake ($8). The Popsicle Spritzers ($8) will be popular among those looking for the Instagram effect as these flavoured popsicles of Watermelon Mint and Watermelon Kiwi Pop, Coconut Water Lychee Pop or Mango Coconut and Passionfruit Pop, will not only look good on your feed, it is a perfect refresher on a hot and humid day.

Still remembered making the visit to Momolato back then when they were still a kiosk at Singapore Management University (they operated from the space that is now run by Hong Seng Curry Rice) — they had subsequently went into online operations, but had recently moved into a brand new space within a shophouse at Haji Lane.

While Momolato was still a relatively simple gelato parlour back then, they had since grown their business and is now halal-friendly whilst also offering keto-friendly gelato — a relatively fresh concept even to this day; patrons at their physical shop space will also be glad to know that they do serve up waffles, croffles (with flavours such as Banana, or Gula Melaka even), as well as popsicles and seasonal plated desserts apart from the scoops of gelato in either cups or cones.

The Pandan Waffle is relatively decent; does come with a slight hint of Pandan fragrance with its batter coming with a green hue in the interior, but the waffle does come off a little dry and clumpy somewhat. Thankfully, each order of the waffle comes with Vanilla Chantilly Cream and a house-made sauce by the side (seemingly a mix of condensed milk(?) and Gula Melaka(?)) — the latter of which being pretty unique with its mellow, yet rich sweetness — paired up with the waffles and even the Banana Croffles perfectly. The Pure Coconut Gelato, also a flavour which is keto-friendly, was pretty smooth, creamy and hints of a whiff of the fruit — not particularly sweet considering the keto-friendly flavours at Momolato are sweetened with natural sweeteners, and almost akin to having the flesh of the fruit itself.

Whilst being a relatively simple establishment in the past, Momolato has since grown over the years during the period where they have ceased physical retail operations — and they are back being more than what they were. Dine-in space at Momolato is rather limited; mostly within the confines of the space in front of the counter that comes with two tables are meant for 4 pax each, and counter seating by the wall though there are also three al-fresco seats at the street itself — do expect a short waiting time for seats here.

Got 3 dairy free flavours from Momolato - Maoshanwang Durian $21, Black Forest $12, Cucumber Lime Mint $12.

They were all sooooooo good! Our favourite was a toss up between the durian (durian sorbet! Not mixed with coconut milk like the usual dairy free durian ice creams) and the black forest (loved the maraschino cherry and sponge cake bits on top, wish they were more and mixed in).

Highly recommended. Can't wait for my next order! They've got some really cute popsicles and regular dairy gelato too.
