Tried a variation of the popular mala hotpot at Peppercorn, 30 Kandahar St. The usual mala hotpot is a dry version, this one comes with a flavorful stock, topped with peppery hot spices. The pepper stays on your tongue, giving the "ma" feeling. As usual, you get to select from a wide variety of ingredients, from meats to fish, tofu, mushrooms, vegetables... The place is cosy and air conditioned.
Every inch of well-lubricated pasta is positively slathered with the glorious black paste, which is simultaneously nuanced and forthcoming in its running quite the gamut of mouthly sensations – bitter, umami, salty, padi spicy. The pork belly is toe-curlingly marvellous, but even as my teeth were giving one slice a pleasurable grind, I was already planning my next forkful of ebony treasure. Ridiculously memorable and addictive. 4.4/5
This was a hosted meal courtesy of Joan Bowen Cafe, a social enterprise situated in MacPherson Road that is run almost entirely by staff with special needs. [Edit as of 18 April 2016: the pop-up has been cancelled.]
A nice place to have steamboat on a cool rainy evening. The soup for the steamboat is the bomb and it’s unlimited refill but they uses fried fish instead of fresh sliced fish so we wouldn’t know if it’s fresh or not.
The place is really crowded at 7:30pm on a rainy friday evening. This also mean that we had a difficult time trying to get a table and with the rain, it makes the whole area very cramp as everyone tries to stay in the sheltered area. The waiting time upon order our food is very slow too. Staffs were always busy and they can’t be bothered to entertain us. We even had to self-service, walk and refill the soup on our own. Food is not bad but I will think twice before visiting them again.
A quieter outlet of the Mellben Group at Opal Crescent, a good choice if you are craving for some crab bee hoon soup at the last minute without wanting to queue! We had both the bee hoon soup and golden sands crab but I would recommend having the crab bee hoon when you're here as its their specialty! The soup is definitely one of the richest and creamiest that I've had. Also, I noticed that the crab in the soup is much sweeter than the golden sands one — they probably used the better crabs for the bee hoon to give more flavor to the soup!

With patties made from 100% vegetable ingredients and the buns from wholemeal grains, you're ensured guilt-free fast food in the form of a delectable burger. Must-try items include the Hawaiian Teriyaki, Cracked Pepper Mayo and the Creamy Shrooms. End off your meal with their vegan dessert, moist and heavenly chocolate cake that is heavy on the lips but not on your hips!

Start with the Ice Cube at only $3, a perfect appetizer of silken tofu, crab sticks and sweet chili sauce. Next, choose from their adorably named cold noodle sets - Penguin (green soba noodles with sesame sauce and chicken), Dolphin (ramen noodles with miso sauce and prawns) and Whale (white noodles with chicken and mushrooms). Don't assume that these healthy noodles are bland and boring, they won't fail to satisfy you.
At The Lawn, "Meat your Greens" is the motto, and what better way to have salad than a perfectly grilled piece of dory or duck breast to keep you satisfied. With every salad, you can select 5 topping and a grilled item. Favourites include Pacific Dory with Fresh Fruit Rub & Herbs, and the Grilled Salsa Duck for the Biopolis outlet. If you're at the Shenton branch, go for the Char-grilled Garlic Prawns. The one thing that truly stands out here is the portion size, no need to worry that you'll be hungry after this salad!
You'll almost always get a perfect cup of coffee at Oriole's. Just off the Keong Saik stretch, this hidden gem is a nice, quiet hideout perfect for some studying, reading, relaxing or catching up with a good friend.
Ranks as one of my favourite cafes. Idyllic and nostalgic location as I grew up there. Coffee is pretty good also. Cakes are interesting. Will want to try their cooked food in the future.
