Price: $4~. This looks completely unappetizing but that could be no further from the truth. This is awesome. Love the crumbly crumbles and the chocolate banana aroma. A word of caution though. This can be a bit too much and can get a bit 'jelat' after a while. If you are there with a friend, you can share this and get something else as well!
Price: $5~. Really can anything at tiong Bahru actually go wrong?!! As with any other desert at tiong Bahru bakery, this Berries tart is amazing. Just look at the glorious toppings! The tart itself was also tart-y to the right amount without being overly hard or brittle. 10/10 would go tiong bahru bakery for the other deserts (since they prove to be quite infallible)
Price:$17. Not bad for a treat-yourself without going broke lunch. This summer chicken stew comes with 2 pieces of sour dough bread with chicken thigh and a creamy stew with carrot and potato. The stew had a good herb aroma and the creamy texture/taste was just right. Though I would personally prefer creamier versions. Haha. The chicken thigh was da bomb as the meat just falls so gracefully off the bone. Then meat was also really tender. The sour dough bread was also crunchy. Though I would really like it if they would give another piece. The potato and carrot cubes add another layer to this dish and they are the safe haven you can escape to when you fee that you had a bit too much meat.
Price:$14~. This Bingsu has a lot going on, most of which are good. Overall a good Bingsu. Just that it can get quite expensive. It will be good for 2 to share. And if there's 3 of you, you might want to get 2, unless y'all are small eaters or if everyone is too paiseh to eat too much. Good combination with I think cheese cake (or something else... I think they ran of the 'something else' and so they gave us cheese cake pieces in replacement. Would go again if I am in the area and feel like having Bingsu that's heavy.
Price: $7~. A soft and slightly sour lemon meringue pie. Great combination as always and nothing can quite go wrong with lemon meringue. (Unless of course you are trying to make one yourself.. Get the peaks right!) nothing super special but if you are along botanics and are looking for a sourish sweet desert, this is it.
Price $11~. Forgot what this cake was exactly called but it's earl grey flavored and it's a cake so in just going to call it early grey cake. It was hugely amazing. The strong earl grey aroma really fills your sense when you take the first bite (or in fact, any other bites because the aroma just keeps coming). The earl grey smell is, however, not overpowering. It is soft and delightful. Leaving you, curiously, with an increasing appetite with every bit you take. We have also ordered some other cakes (eg strawberry shortcake) but they REALLY pale in comparison to this. I went with a few friends and the consensus was unanimous. Always good to treat yourself to this soft and delightful treat at the end of the day, the week, or when you are taking a short leave. And on a side note: for those who don't already know, TWG is not set up in 1837 (despite it having the '1837' name being displayed prominently atop its logo. It was set up within the last decade or so. And the '1837' merely represents the tea trade in Singapore. Minus points for their deceptive marketing.
Price $4+. Big big disappointment. See the menu and it said something like 8 treasure beancurd and instantly the word 'blackball' pop to my head. Expected it to be of that standard or type. But great disappointment. The nondescript toppings (peanuts, green beans, and unwieldy chunks of sweet potato among others) could hardly do any worst to the desert. Though to be fair the beancurd on its own is passable. If I were here again, I would certainly give this a pass in favor of the snow ice or other desert.
Price: $4~. This desert pudding looks completely normal or some would even say boring. But this is one the the best item on the menu. This creme pudding with biscuit crumbs on top is just the best classic combination. Well they all say old is gold. You do not need really out of the world novelty to be awesome. You just need to be able to fit the different part properly. And this has achieved that. And what's more, the individual parts - the biscuit crumbs and creme pudding are themselves well made. The pudding being smooth and the crumbs being crumbly. 10/10 would get this again
Price: $6.80. My second time getting this snow ice and still find it really 😍. Really loved the soft and fluffy snow ice. It just melts in your mouth and makes it difficult for you to resist the temptation to have another spoonful of the fluffy ice. Also it has a really nice milk pudding that comes with the snow ice (i.e. They come as a package) to give you a change in texture (if you happen to find the fluffy snow ice a little too much to handle). Also there's a small bowl of cut mango (that's sweet to boot). 10/10 would visit again. Find this place by walking further down from the Rochor beancurd (i.e. In direction away from the prata house). Let this be your alternative to the all too common ice cream from upper Thomson
Price: $48. A great dish to share and to go with their signature wheat grass beer. Great way to end off the week and chill your fri night with great food, great music, great beer and great company. This dish has everything you would want to try. From prok chop to squid to sausages to kebabs and wedges. Great for 3-4 pax! And don't forget to get their wheatgrass beer!
Price: $10++. Verdict: ok ok. I've previously made a review on Lokal's sticky date pudding where I've raved it over and over. Sadly in this case, I am unable to say the same about the banana cake. This banana cake is admittedly good, but I just don't like it as much. I guess I would prefer for the interior of the banana cake to be slightly more moist. The one I had at Lokal was a little too dry for my taste.
Price:$10++. Verdict: yes, would be back again. Lokal is one of your typical cafes that has ridden on the recent cafe rage. But Lokal is unlike many of the cafes that have run-off-the-mill food items, subpar interior design and sometimes horrible service. The entire environment in Lokal is extremely comfortable. From the furniture (sofa with cushion pillows), to the warm and rustic interior design, to the proactive without being oppressive service, and finally to the really tasty dessert, this place really deserves a 2 thumbs up. Of the really tasty dessert, the one that really stood out is this sticky date pudding with vanilla ice cream. The pudding was appropriately sweet without being oppressively or overly so. The texture was also good. It was firm without being hard. This sticky date pudding has this irresistible charm that makes you want to dig your fork into it again and again. Make sure you do not forget your large scoop of ice cream on the side! Eat it together with your sticky date pudding! Would return to Lokal again when I am in the area!
