This is the 冻顶乌龙鲜奶茶 Dong Dong Oolong Fresh Milk Tea ($4.70) which came in the signature rustic packaging of this bubble tea brand. Our eyes widened upon the first mouth as the tea’s rich robust flavour permeated our senses. There is just this delicate balance of tea and milk in this drink that won us over totally. It has been awhile since we tasted a milk tea that is this legit. We would recommend getting 50% so that you can taste the tea in its natural state without being overly sweetened. This beverage proves to be a refreshing, mood-lifting treat on a hot afternoon.

After a moderately filling lunch, we wanted a nice and cool milk tea to complete the meal. At Jurong, there are many milk tea outlets which include the usual big milk tea brands. However, we wanted to try something new and was more than happy to stumble into KECha at JCube.
.
On the second floor of the mall resides KECha, a small, unassuming stall that actually had 3-5 people standing in front of it, waiting for their order. The menu looked pretty comprehensive and we were certainly attracted to the colourful pictures of their drinks.
.
After careful deliberation, we went with their Earl Grey Milk Tea ($4). The decision was a good one. The drink had a light milky flavour that was very pleasant tasting. It was not too sweet and allowed the strong flavour and aroma of the earl grey tea to shine. We also liked that the drink came in a bear-shaped cup that was insanely cute. You may also pay a bit more and opt for the bottle.
.
The simple milk tea from KECha took us by surprise in terms of both taste and aesthetics. The only downside was that service was a bit slow as there was only one staff. Regardless, we still enjoyed our afternoon tea and will most definitely return for their drinks.

.
During our latest visit, we noticed the appearance of Soufflé Pancakes on some diners’ tables and decided to hunt the stall down. It will be impossible to miss SweeT.Rex with its cute and vibrant push-cart store front that stood out from its neighbours.
.
As the pancakes are freshly made upon ordering, be prepared to wait for about 10-15 mins.
.
We got the Soufflé Pancakes + Ice cream ($5.00) with caramel sauce. There are also chocolate and strawberry sauces alternatives. The pancakes do not wobble much when vigorously shaken and have a light Japanese cheese cake consistency upon visual inspection. However, they have a much lighter texture which is closer to something like mousse when tasted. Every bite is also accompanied by a very light hint of buttery and milky fragrance.
.
The vanilla ice cream was a major let down as we thought if done well, this creamy accompaniment could have perfected this dessert. It definitely was not worth it to pay a dollar more for this cold, tasteless blob.
.
While you’re waiting for the upcoming soufflé pancakes at VivoCity, this might be a good substitute in the meanwhile to satisfy your cravings.

The Mushroom Soup ($2.50) tasted very much like a saltier version of a campbell mushroom soup. Although it lacked the fragrance of mushrooms, it was served hot and went pretty well with the garlic bread.
.
The Black Pepper Sirloin Steak ($13.00) was quite ordinary. However, considering the price point and location, the cooking standard for this dish was good. The glorious slab of meat came sizzling in a black pepper based sauce on top of a hot plate which proved to be a great starter for the senses. The meat retained its juiciness and we thoroughly enjoyed chewing on every bite.
.
We would recommend to go for the Mixed Platter ($12.00) which includes chicken chop, pork chop, bacon, ham, egg, fries, baked beans and a garlic bread. The pork chop was the only disappointment as the meat was dry, tough and was not well seasoned. On the other hand, the bacon was very flavourful and was crispy with a slightly charred side. The sunny side up egg had a really runny yolk which we gladly mopped up with the crispy garlic bread.
.
The Grill Fish ($8.00) was fantastic. The skin had a gentle crunch on each bite. In contrast, the flesh was super soft, juicy and came off easily when cut with a fork. Paired with zesty lemon juice and the cool tartar sauce, this grilled fish would make us drool even in our sleep. For sides, a fried potato ball was served. Although it was not served hot, the crust maintained its crunchy texture. The interior was made of a smooth and fine potato mix that had a slight buttery taste.
.
We ordered Chicken Spaghetti ($6.00) that was full of unpleasant surprises. The spaghetti tasted too soggy while the tomato sauce did not stand out. The real surprise was the chicken chunks as they felt like the sweet and sour pork. The chicken was not unpleasant tasting but was just really weird with western noodles.
.
Another dish that failed to make the mark was the Fried Rice with Fish Cutlet ($6.00). The fried rice arrived with no trace of any warmth and tasted mushy. The rice felt like it was barely seasoned. The batter failed to give the fish cutlet a crispy texture though the flesh within was still pretty soft.

The iced Sikhye ($2.50) offered a light refreshing sweetness at the beginning of each mouthful and we enjoyed how the rice fragrance would slowly dissipate at the back of our throats when we swallowed it. Also, the residues of cooked rice added an interesting texture to the drink.
.
Also, we got the Budae Jigae Ramyeon ($9.90). The ramyeon came in a pretty big bowl and consist of standard army stew ingredients like sausage, luncheon meat, tofu and fishcakes which were all pretty tasty. However, the crux to this dish was the soup base which we thought could be more savoury and that spiciness could be down a notch as well. Another issue was that the noodles was overcooked and tasted slightly soggy.
.
We also ordered the Chap Chae + Soy Chicken Dosirak ($9.90) that came in a rectangular metal box. This dish was right up our alley. The soya sauce chicken was very tender and savoury while the chap chae provided an added sesame fragrance. It felt like we were eating both rice and noodles at the same time due to the glass noodles in the chap chae. Add a piece of kimchi and a piece of egg to each spoonful of this rice mixture for an extra palatable bite!
.
The final item that we got was the 6 pieces Fried Chicken ($7.90) that came in a mix of wingettes and drumettes. There are two flavours to choose from: spicy and soy, and you are allowed to mix the flavours. The chicken was very tender on the inside and was mildly crispy on the outside as the sauce had seeped into the skin, making it less crunchy but more flavourful. Both of us concurred that the soy chicken tasted better than its spicy counterpart as the spicy sauce was rather overwhelming, drawing our attention away from the meat itself.

Winter melon milk tea is a beverage that we really enjoy from ShareTea. It may be a tad sweet for some people but the melon aroma is simply too pleasing and will serve as a great drink to perk you up. Our only issue was that the tea taste was slightly lacking and could do with a little less milk. We recommend adding pudding as a topping to make the drink even more irresistible!

The Soya Sauce Chicken Rice ($5.00) was neither bad nor fantastic. My favourite part of any chicken rice is the fluffy rice that is infused thoroughly with chicken oil. For the rice here, it was fragrant but slightly mushy. The chicken itself was pretty tasty as it was tender and soft. However, I thought that the sauce on the chicken was nothing special and it made the rice even mushier. With that being said, I am usually not a big fan of my rice doused with sauce so I may be a bit biased. On the other hand, Bear found the sauce to be pretty nice. I did enjoy the chili sauce and dark sauce provided though as they tasted high in quality and matched well with the chicken.
.
When the lotus pork ribs soup ($15.00) was served, we got a rude shock as it came in a big pot meant to serve 3 to 4 people. We thought that the soup would be served in an average-sized bowl like those that we get from lao huo tang. I felt at fault for not asking clearly but we thought the waitress was not being nice by upselling us the soup when there were clearly just the two of us. The soup had a lot of ingredients including lotus, pork ribs, cuttlefish, wolfberries, fig and other herbs. It was lightly seasoned and we thought that it could do with a bit more flavour. The pork ribs were not as soft as I would have liked even though the waitress mentioned that their soups are simmered for many hours.

We ordered the Ah Ma Mee Sua ($4.00) and the Ah Gong Tau Chiam ($4.50)
.
Between mee sua and tau chiam, we felt that the former tasted better in terms of both flavour and texture. The mee sua matches better with the slightly thick broth that was mildly seasoned and did exude an “ah ma” feel to it. On the other hand, the unique soybean taste from the tau chiam was not really our cup of tea and the noodles were slightly soggy from absorbing all the soup.
.
The sliced pork was seasoned nicely and had a nice bite to it. The pork meatballs were savoury and chewy but we felt like there was too much flour mixed in it as there were parts that tasted too gooey and starchy. Also, while the pig livers were very soft and tender, they tasted a little undercooked as the bloody taste was very distinct and penetrated the soup. The mushrooms were flavourful and juicy and I might like it even more than the pork even though I am a meat lover. The egg on its own was nice but did not seem to elevate the dish further.
.
Towards the end of the meal, we found it slightly hard to finish the entire bowl of noodles as the soup tasted increasingly starchy.
.
Overall, we recommend the noodles at Chye Lai Ah Ma Mee Sua if you are someone who enjoys simple and homely taste. If not, we would suggest that you get other food items that offer richer and bolder flavours to complement the noodles here.

Ordered a Matcha Ice Blended with Hojicha Soft Serve ($8.50) for dessert after dinner and did not regret it. .
The matcha tasted premium and reminded me of the premium quality green tea I have had in Kyoto before. The hojicha ice cream was just as awesome. It was very smooth and had an additional roasted aroma that will linger in your mouth.
.
I enjoyed this combo but thought it was slightly pricey. Also, those of you who are not fans of green tea may find the strong tea taste a bit overwhelming. If so, my suggestion would be to just order the drink or the ice cream but not both.

The Fluffy Steamed Eggs ($5.90) came in a puffy cloud shape served in traditional black stew pot. However, it was not as soft and fluffy as we thought it would be. Despite that, I enjoyed how they prepared the egg with only a hint of Korean sesame oil aroma to retain its original taste. .
The second side that we got was the Sweet Spicy Fried Chicken & Crispy Toppoki ($8.90). The toppoki was the caramelised kind which lent an additional sweet flavour to the chewy rice cake. I like how the caramel layer was thin and not too hard to bite into. The chicken was super tender and yummy but just had a little too much batter on them.
.
For meat lovers, their Chicken Bulgogi ($8.50) is a must order. The portion given was pretty generous because the whole pile was like 95% meat and 5% onions! Usually for the same serving size elsewhere, it would probably be 60% onions/bean sprouts and 40% meat. The chicken was lean, super tender and well marinated. .
There was a generous amount of ingredients provided in the sour Kimchi Pork Belly Stew ($13.90). We wished that the pork belly slices in the soup were a little thinner though because they felt a little tough to chew on. Overall, this dish is lighter than I thought as normal kimchi stews tend to be laden with kimchi resulting in a overpowering, overspicy kind of soup. .
This was Bear’s first time trying Hotteok and she couldn’t keep still when they prepared it. The Hotteok ($3.90 for 2pcs) resembled a flattened mooncake but tasted otherwise. The outer layer had deep fried mantou texture while the inside was filled with a non-flowy sweet paste. The pastry was served almost immediately up and was disappointingly cold. Despite being already full from her meal, Bear used her dessert stomach to wipe out this sinful dessert easily.

1. Chinese Noodles Stall
.
It is a common sight to see a never ending queue to this stall that offers no frills, economic noodles. The popular dishes are the dumpling noodles and pork rib noodles, all at a starting price of $2.30! .
The noodles were still as bouncy and chewy as we remembered it to be and it absorbed the umami flavour of the soy-based sauce perfectly. The chilli sauce was not very spicy and added a nice shrimpy taste to the dish. The highlight of the dish, the pork ribs, were nicely flavoured as the meat was deeply penetrated by the marinade but it would be even better if the cartilages were softer. Lastly, the plump dumplings were stuffed generously with minced meat and prawn, and the skin was very smooth. .
2. Western Stall (Previously known as Salad Bar in the old canteen)
.
We went for the red wine vinaigrette chicken ($4.50) to relive our fond memory of this appetising dish. To be accurate, the sauce used for this dish seems to be a mixture of red wine vinaigrette and mushroom sauce working in harmony to give a sweet fragrance followed by a slight hint of sourness that matched the grilled meat really well. However, the chicken was a disappointment as they were not all consistent in texture and taste though the portion given was substantial. Most of them tasted overcooked and was slightly tough, while only one piece tasted juicy and had a nice crispy outer layer. .
3. Ayam Penyet Stall
.
The final must-try dish at the Frontier is the Ayam Penyet ($4.80) from the Uncle Penyet stall which we will implore you to forsake your dieting plans for. The deep fried, golden brown chicken leg, topped with fried batter crumbs served on a rattan weaved basket definitely brought back memories of the good old days. The standard of this dish is still maintained as the chicken leg has a nice, crispy outer layer and was tender on the inside. The fried tau kwa (pressed tofu) that accompanied it was equally well fried, was soft on the inside and had a very strong but enjoyable bean flavour to it.

Old Chang Kee always never fail to come up with new flavours once in awhile to add to their already popular collection of puff pastries. The latest addition is the Kaya Butter Puff.
.
Bear was quite excited to try this as she is fond of any food that can store delicious Kaya in it. The Kaya Butter Puff is sold at 1 for $1.40 and 2 for $2.50.
.
The unassuming Kaya Butter Puff  tasted very light and had a strong buttery taste to it. Also, it was much more crumbly and flakier as compared to their popular curry puff counterparts.
.
The Pandan Kaya filling was to our liking as it had a thick consistency to it and was not too sweet.
.
For $1.40 per puff, we thought that the puff could have been bigger with more filling as we only bit into the kaya after three bites. This would probably be a “try-once-only” kind of a snack for novelty sake and eventually patrons would probably still stick with the good old Old Chang Kee curry puff instead.
