Satisfying Japanese Buffet One of the best Japanese buffets around with a price that doesn’t leave you feeling the pinch in your wallets. Sashimi was fresh, nabeyakis were good, grilled fishes were seasoned nicely and the black sesame ice cream was a nice surprise! However, their oysters aren’t the freshest, but who’s complaining when you’re paying RM70++ for unlimited buffet time and other good dishes?

For Japanese Food Done Right This sought-after spot hidden in Central Plaza has one of the city's best spreads for Japanese buffets and at a justified price too (RM59.90 for adults, RM44 for senior citizens). Start with their cool cuts that sit at the top of our list: salmon and butterfish sashimi. Then, fire it up with the stately tuna tataki and fried morsels — the soft-shell crab and battered squid tentacles are especially delicious. There are also oysters, fresh or grilled with cod roe, and a range of heavier options like garlic fried rice and cold soba to choose from. Whichever dish you decide on, you don't have to run to get it because here, food arrives at your table fresh upon order (all you can order). And while many buffet restaurants limit dining duration, Mitasu will let you linger all night long, perhaps to get to know your foodie date better over more food. Reservations are necessary — make it weeks in advance. Avg price per person: RM60 Photo by Burppler Jessica Lau

Premium Nihonbashi Mori Wagyu cut 600g (RM480) with their homemade dipping sauces & Special Salted Beef Tongue (RM40) are really delicious (2 of us actually able to finish all of them)! Don’t forget to make reservation before you come in. Always full house during the Friday night. If there’s only 2 guests, you will be seated at their bar place.

Wagyu Set (RM420) That much money worth of Wagyu better be good! The best cut was the Akami (lean cut belly), which was packed with flavour and scored best on the melt-in-your-mouth factor. The rest, whether it was the sirloin, brisket or chuck were hits-and-misses. Since those are sliced very thin, I suspect it would’ve been better cooked by a pro than by customers - yet those were the ones they left to us to grill (only because when they asked we said no need lol). The individual saucers of meat salt and dipping sauce are not to be ignored! They’re really good with the meat. I enjoyed my time at Shin Nihon the last time I was here because of the tip-top service and how they handled the grill so I’ll highly recommend requesting for them to do all the cooking!

For Wagyu Beef Excellence One of our finest finds this month is this new, nifty Japanese joint for barbecue and beyond. Shin Nihon shines for its excellent hospitality and a beefy selection of prime Wagyu cuts, charcoal-grilled at your table. Solo diners should snag a seat by the bar, which affords a view of their spirited chefs at work, whereas bigger parties will prefer the more private booth seats. Start slick with the Salted Thick Cut Tongue (RM35), skillfully seared in salt and soy for melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Depending on your budget, follow with either Today's Premium 4 Cuts (RM140) — 200 grams of assorted premium Wagyu — or the simpler Skirt Flank (RM60) for affordably priced umami-packed beef. Spot a hint of Korean dishes on the menu, including a formidable Ishiyaki Stone-Bowl Bibimbap (RM15) that sizzles with flavour. The bar also heralds highballs with a dice game promotion: roll the same number twice for a Whisky Soda (RM20) on the house! Avg price per person: RM70
