Even till today, when the workmanship and labour cost is sky high, the uncle and auntie still insisted to shred the radish by hand and smash their own yam paste. If you looked closely, you could even spot the bits of radish. .

Whenever I had their carrot cakes, it reminded me of the days when I was helping my grand mom making them. During the Chinese New Year, she will make dozens of trays and distributed them to the neighbor and relatives. I would help to shred the radish and my grand mom would fry the radish with Chinese sausages and dried shrimps. .

To keep their pricing as affordable as possible, the boss had used lesser dried shrimps. Because of their old age, they usually make dozen of yam cake and dozen of carrot cakes. So be there early as they will be snatched up in an hour. #Hawkerpedia

I am never a fan of radish and yam cakes for how starchy and chewy they are, but this completely turned my impression upside down. Sure enough, each piece comes smooth as though it's fish paste with visible shreds of radishes in them, and the accompanying Sambal gives it the savoury and spiciness it needs to flavour. Yam cakes were also of the same texture, with the signature earthiness of the root vegetable and came with pieces of dried shrimp for some added texture and flavour.
