Matcha Tart ($7)

got that strong matcha taste with mixed berries hidden inside the tart. i felt that the tart is not that hard and crunchy texture.

Stars of Kovan has been bringing the Kovan neighbourhood a wide variety of F&B establishments ever since tenants have started to move into the commercial units within the development — prominent tenants include See You Latte, the second outlet of The Humble Scoop (a favourite of mine that had its humble beginnings at Katong Shopping Centre), Sweet Symphony, and the now-defunct Sugartree Gelato that was by the folks of Two Bakers. Eclipse is a new takeaway bakery shop that focuses on cakes, chocolates and pastries — offerings include whole and sliced cakes, entremets, tarts, viennoiserie and cookies (sold in a jar). Whilst being of a takeaway nature, patrons can easily dine at the tables and benches within the development which have also been demarcated to comply with social distancing requirements. We found ourselves ordering the following here:

- Pain au Chocolat; and
- 72% Dark Chocolate Cake

Between the two, the 72% Dark Chocolate Cake set a stronger impression with us. It is undoubtedly a satisfying chocolate cake, though one that is more firm and dense — holds up to the slicing by a fork fairly well without being too crumbly. Felt that the chocolate used was decent; a nice hint of bittersweetness — the ganache being rich and decadent, though we did feel that the dark chocolate here did still left us a rather faint sensation of scratchiness of the throat after a couple of forkfuls. It wasn’t something too bothersome, though there are chocolate cakes around that just didn’t give that feeling. At the bottom of the cake along the sides, chocolate crumbs have been included to give a crisp crunch; helped provide the cake a contrast of texture which we quite liked. In retrospect, the Pain au Chocolat is pretty decent — we reckoned that they had probably used the same 72% Dark Chocolate here since the chocolate tasted fairly similar; the pastry was sufficiently light and buttery but it’s a pretty standard Pain au Chocolat otherwise.

Wouldn’t say that I will make an out-of-the-way visit for Eclipse for their bakes and cakes, but I do think they work as a decent option to grab some cakes for celebrations if within the neighbourhood — the offerings here are pretty decent and respectable for the price, though the sliced cakes are a little small as compared to the same from other establishments (not something I would be complaining about though). A decent addition to the Kovan neighbourhood overall.
