Food Hunt In Seoul, Korea
Even before it opens at 11am, you’ll see a queue forming as people flock down to Gwangjang Market for these freshly-made doughnuts.
Kkwabaegi aka Twisted Doughnuts (KRW1,000), are usually made from wheat flour or glutinous rice flour which gives it a more chewy texture. Fried till golden brown before lightly coated in cinnamon sugar, it’s hard to stop at one.
1Q84, from Murakami?! Neh, it's another churro store in Seoul. Injeolmi Churfait is creatively name as one side of the cup consist of deep-fried churros with Injeolmi (soybean) powder whereas the other side is of vanilla soft serve. The difference? Nothing as good as Street Churros...
While it's made of simple vanilla soft serve, it's Instagram-worthy with the minty cotton candy and a lightning bolt candy!! Plus there's popping candy hidden inside for the Lightning touch...
There's two outlets in Myeongdong itself!! Here you're able to try traditional steamed dumplings (krw10000) that are made of finest quality Korean pork stuffed together into the thin dumpling with fragrant Chinese leeks, fresh vegetables and homemade sesame oil. So addictive that it's hard to stop at one only.
Homilpat is one of the patbingsu cafe that I think serves the best bingsu around, so how can I not bring my friends there and try it?! Red Bean Watermelon, available only on seasonal basis, has big cubes of juicy watermelon placed on fine milky shaved ice. There's also a separate bowl of homemade red bean and tteok (Korean rice cake) that you can scoop and eat with 💕
We had the Cinnamon Sugar Churros (krw2300) with hot chocolate dip (krw700). The churros is freshly made so the exterior is crispy but retain the airy inside. Add a bit of chocolate sauce and it's a delicious snack during the cold night.
@churro101sg will be have an all-day promotion of 1-for-1 churro tomorrow for their official opening. Don't miss it!
Cold weather doesn't deter us from eating ice cream, especially when walking past a Softree outlet in Bukcheon. It's Magic Lamp, one of the store's best seller, is made of organic milk ice cream, caramel swirls and topped with special powder. The special powder is similar to injeolmi but much tastier.
Probably one of the most frequently seen store around Seoul is Street Churros, there's even one in Bukcheon area. Coated with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar and generous portion, the churros are a delight. For chocolate lover like us, you might want to go for Spanish Churros Con Chocolate (krw3000) that comes with a small cup of thick, chocolaty dip.
You can choose to customise your own cup or select one of their special menu. With too many choices available, we decided to go for their special menu: Thunder Bomb (krw6100) & Macamelron (krw6300). Cotton thunder with popping sugar, a dreamy yet unique combination as you experience "weather" in your mouth. And though the ice cream was milk flavour, it was not over empowering. But the latter was the one that stole the "lightning". Delicious salted caramel ice cream topped with mangcaron, we just couldn't get enough of it 💕
Feel Good! Cake (기분좋아! 캐이크), one of the rainbow cake available there. Instead of fresh cream, Philadelphia cream cheese were pipped between the layers of colors making it's just too pretty to be eaten! But while it's pretty, I wish the sponge cake was more moist. And the portion is huge for even two person.
One of the sinful snack that we kept having while in Korea is Churros. Every place you drop by there will be at least a store selling churros. Coffee Chu's churros are more chewy, kinda like mochi but it's still crispy on the outside. We had both the Original Cinnamon and Nutty Choc churros. Wish there was more chocolate filling for the latter, but the bits of nuts in it was enough to compensate that!
You can easily find stores in Namdaemun Market that sells this street food. I went to this store located near Gate 3 in the market that sells both sweet and savoury versions. Sweet hotteok (krw1000) has a mix of sugar, honey and nuts whereas the savoury one (krw1000) is filled with japchae - glass noodles, carrots, and spinach. The deep-fried hotteok is chewy and a trifle oily, so might want to share this!

A bit of sweetness can drown out a whole load of bitterness. So I’m always having sweets 🧁🍧🍡 Instagram/ TikTok: Cassakating
