Steak Puns Are A Rare Medium Well Done Steakout has been around for ages, and they’ve had a change of chefs a year or two ago. However, the last time I paid a trip to Steakout was also a couple of years ago, which means that there’s now only one question that steaks out: has the quality dropped? Fortunately, the answer is a resounding no. This 250 gram slab of Angus ribeye straight from New Zealand costs $26.90 nett and is worth the moolah. Tender, succulent bovine is sublimely seasoned with salt & pepper, and served up with a redolent red wine sauce. That’s really all you need for a decent meal that’ll steak out in your memory. Of course, the sides are still rather disappointing, but bear in mind that you’re here to chow down on the cow, not on the cow’s food.

NZ Angus Ribeye - 250g ($26.90) This was slightly disappointing, especially considering the price. The steak while well-seasoned turned out to be a little dry, and slightly over-cooked for something that was supposed to be medium-rare. Quantity of the side dishes were not great, and other places like Astons etc. which have similar offerings at cheaper prices are more generous with their sides. If the steak itself was better, it might have been worth it. But unfortunately, this fell short of expectations. To be fair, their non-steak items like chicken are much cheaper and probably more value for money.

Potato Gratin This was served along with the mains. The rich and tasty potato gratin comes with thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy and cheesy sauce.

Confit de Canard This hidden gem serves up authentic French fare. The duck confit is a must-order. Crackling crispy skin on the outside and tenderly moist on the inside, served with tangy red wine sauce.

Angus Striploin Steak Air-flown grass-fed Angus with white wine pepper

Crystal Sugar Churros Fondue Came with muddled raspberry jam, milk chocolate and white chocolate fondue ITS SO GOOD

Hot Dark Chocolate Hot chocolate has a way of cuddling you from the inside, making you feel all warm and fuzzy. The dark version here is made from Venezuelan Criollo cocoa beans which is why the chocolatey goodness is a few notches above many others. Served in the thoughtfully-designed "hug mug", this light and frothy drink always leaves me with a smile.

One Sundae I Can't Get Over I usually don't love peanut butter all that much but damn, the 'Euphoria Peanut Butter Chocolate Fudge Sundae' was beyond awesome.

For Western Comfort Fare This established cafe in Bussorah Street serves up generous portions of Western fare. The eclectic decor, homey vibes and familiar menu choices instantly puts one at ease, making this a great spot for quiet lunches or family gatherings. The pastas are a favourite here. Try the Aglio Olio with Seafood ($16.90) and Classic Bolognese ($17.90), or go for one of their generously portioned mains like the Fish & Chips ($17.90), Chicken Cutlet ($19.90) or Grilled Chicken ($18.90). Prices are on the higher side, but the value shows in the large servings. Cajun Chicken Aglio Olio ($14.90) If you're looking for a Muslim-establishment that serves up decent pasta, I am... cafe has got your back! One of the OG cafes in the area, I am... serves up simple, yet hearty dishes, ranging from pastas, to burgers and many more! With #BurppleBeyond, we were only able to select from the pasta section & went for the Cajun Chicken Aglio Olio. This dish packed a punch with their Cajun seasoning but did not overpower the entire dish. The spaghetti was lightly tossed in olive oil, and topped with a grilled Cajun chicken-a simple yet tough dish to master.

Penne Pesto Pasta ($15.90) Located at the entrance (from North Bridge Road) of Haji Lane, I am... cafe can be easily spotted from afar with it's large signage and Alfresco-like dining space. As a Muslim-owned establishment, their dishes are made accessible to more cafe-goers who enjoys visiting this area! An early lunch meant that we could grab a seat at this popular cafe and we ordered the Penne Pesto Pasta ($15.90). It comes with perfectly booked penne served with a large portion of grilled chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, olives and pesto herbs. The chicken was pre-shredded, but still retained some moisture to ensure that it's tender. The pesto was well-balanced without being too salty and the sun-dried tomatoes added a nice sour tang to the dish. Overall, a satisfying dish to re-order when I visit! Thankfully with #BurppleBeyond, we got this at 1 for 1, so my pasta was half the price, definitely worth it!

Good For Groups! Pastas and Burgers all taste super good! I recommend Cajun Chicken and Chicken pesto if you're getting the 1-for-1deal. They have several seating for groups of 4-6.

Paella (1 serving: S$28, 2 servings: S$39) I suggested to Cat that we try J's for dinner as part of our Entertainer app adventures. The warm fluffy saffron rice dish with marinated chicken, tilapia and salmon is perfectly moist and aromatic. The chicken was amazingly tender and the chunks of salmon was so so fresh! We'd love to go back again for the delicious paella that wins in terms of fuss-free eating and taste.

Churros with Banana & Mango Churros layered with salted caramel bananas, fresh mangoes & coconut infused. It was a bit too creamy for me! ($12)

Lamb Tostadas Crispy corn tortillas with slow cooked leg of lamb served with spicy pick de gallo. Authentic taste! ($18)

What A Splendid Soup Offered as one of the starters for their set lunch, this "pumpkin velouté" left a deep impression on me. Why? Because unlike many other pumpkin soups, it contained quite a bit of cream; thus the frothy richness and gorgeous milky orange hue. I was also completely sold when I discovered what it came with, namely a quivery, very lightly poached egg and crisped piece of bacon. Yummmmmms!

Well Crafted Set Lunch During my very recent visit, I was pleased to see that the chef had made some tweaks to the set lunch menu and price. Plating looked a little more casual now but the quality of the food and cooking was still impressive for what you pay. There're two options for each of the three courses. For $25++, you get an appetiser and a main, while the $33++ gets you dessert too. Being greedy, I chose the latter and started with the "pumpkin soup with poached egg and croutons". For my main course, I picked the "seared scallops with mash and spinach" over the "beef brochette with truffle mash and bordelaise sauce" although it was a close fight. Closing my meal on a sweet note was the "mille feuille with strawberries and creme patisserie". All in all, it was a masterfully executed lunch that left me happily full.

Good Value French Cuisine ($33++ and $28++ for 3 and 2 courses respectively) Balzac Bistro offers two options per course for their set lunch and they all sound really interesting. I picked the foie gras and duck terrine as my starter. But for reasons unknown, it was replaced with duck rillette today. Not that I'm complaining because it was tasty and attractively presented with toasted baguette, pickles and salad. The pan seared sea scallops dish was my choice of main course. Fresh and succulent, the scallops were accompanied by large meaty mushrooms on a bed of butter squash purée. I decided to close my meal on a sweet note of poached pear (which came cubed and still quite crunchy) and champagne sabayon. The set lunch menu at Balzac is pretty good value in my view, especially with the house-made bread (served with butter plus a chickpea dip), and the atmospheric Parisian bistro decor thrown in.

Quality Food & Service Thoroughly enjoyed myself here. Steak was amazing, go for the ribeye for greater satisfaction! The red wine elevated the taste of the food. Chocolate lava cake was one of the best I have ever had but steak is the star. Look out for promotions as they are usually very value for money! Service is awesome 😎

Pizza Par Excellence Pizza al Benno, 35 ++. Expensive yes, worth it? Yes. A true treat, mouth wateringly good. Here’s hoping the new incarnation of this restaurant in the same premises retains the quality of the pizzas. I have high hopes :)

Burrata, slow-roasted tomato & Sicilian oregano [$30] Staying close to their roots, you will not go wrong with this classic Italian combination. The slow roasted tomatoes were really sweet and juicy. Loved how the real tomatoes were used here instead of just spreading the paste as base. Smear the creamy soft burrata across the slice and dig right in! 😋 *********************** Was extremely saddened by the news that Osteria and Pizzeria Mozza will cease operations with effect from Friday, 27 July 2018. I speak fondly of this place and always keep it in my go to list for the perfect mastery of pizza doughs. I suppose with every end comes a new beginning. The current restaurant space will reopen as Nostra Cucina on Wednesday, 1 August 2018. Let’s savor the next 10 days of this establishment’s existence and look forward to the next!

Bianca: crab, garlic, chili padi, fresh & dried Sicilian oregano [$37] Go for this if you’re feeling adventurous and you like spicy! Most of the time crab is more commonly paired with tomato but this one has got a pretty unique paste-y cheesy cream base which did not turn out to be cloying or overwhelming. The chili padi helped to cut through the richness by adding some heat! 🔥 Loved how thin the pizzas are. Crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside! Every bite of this pizza was intriguing to my taste buds.
