We were blown away by the amazing food!
Some notable highlights among the many: - Crab Bee Hoon - It is the spawning season for crabs, as such, the crabs we got were brimming with delicious crab roe! The beehoon and soup were incredibly tasty and infused with Wok Hei. The soup had pieces of crunchy lard which made the mouthfeel even better. The Umami when you combine these elements with the crab roe was simply divine. Let me tell you what's better, THEY DO SOUP REFILLS! I mean...this is awesome! - Fermented Pork Belly - Another wonderful dish, had a deep aroma of fermented beancurd and rose wine. Lightly battered and expertly fried. Perfectly paired with freshly pounded chilli, lime and ginger. That chilli sauce was a wonderful combination.
Overall, I would rate this as one of the best szr char experiences in SG. Starve yourself prior and go crazy here. ๐Ÿ”ธ

We tried One Man Coffee's All-In Brekkie, with Burpple's 1-for-1 deal, I thought it was pretty worth it! Scrambled egg, avocado, sausage, bacon strips, sauteed mushrooms, side salad and sourdough bread.
I thought the scrambled egg was very well done, it wasn't overcooked and had the right amount of run in the protein/yolk. The sausage and bacon were tasty morsels, well seasoned, to be expected from a hearty breakfast plate. Mushrooms were tasty and not overly seasoned. The avocado was very fresh and a squeeze of lemon heightened its creaminess, it went very well with the toast. Only let down was that I wasn't quite sure if the bread was sourdough (?), it tasted like normal toast bread to me and did not have the slightly fermented/lacto taste as do most sourdough breads.
Overall with the Burpple Beyond deal, it was worth it!

Growing up around wet markets and coffee shops, my parents would often treat me to a small plate of Fun Choy during an early Saturday morning out at the market. Fun Choy isn't the most complex of dishes, but something as simple and modest as this brings back the fondest of memories. Upon discovering this at Tiong Bahru Pau at Bedok Interchange food centre, I could not resist!
Hear me out, this may go against popular opinion - but I do like my Fun Choy overcooked, and I believe it should be. You see.. The original one is stored in a steaming compartment for hours, causing the sliced hardboiled egg to become firm, the char siew to be dry, and the rice to be grainy. Everything is then smothered with a sweet thick sauce to glaze. With this formula, it just works! This was the norm, and how we had it growing up. That was how it is! Tasting this rendition from Tiong Bahru pau just brought back so many memories of childhood. The only dash of modernity is the fact they added a single slice of Lap Chiong (Chinese Sausage) which adds an extra dimension. Dishes like these are fast disappearing, they are so inextricably linked with experiences of Singaporeans growing up.

The wok hei is developed by frying the hor fun noodles over and extremely high heat, causing the oil to combust and catch fire as it is heated beyond its flash point. The resulting noodles is smoky and hearty, which complements the starchy/egg gravy and beef pieces. Perfect with green chilli!

Long queues for this place, I can see why!

It holds its own very well and does not live in the shadow of its popular competitor. Unagiya offers various Hitsumabushi sizes, the most impressive of which being the XL which can fill at least 3-4 stomachs easily. We ordered this and what came was an impressively large plate of Eel goodness.
For those who have tried and are familiar with Man Man, allow me to use that as a reference point.

Onto the Unagi - Crispy and charred on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. There was no muddy/fishy aroma and everything was very fresh. We ordered the Tokyo sauce which was the more savoury of the two optiond available (the other being the Singapore sauce, which was developed to suit more local tastes, this is sweeter and more comparable to Man Man's marinade/sauce offering). The Tokyo sauce was lovely, it did not overpower the taste and freshness of the grilled Unagi and that was what we really enjoyed about it. They also offer some sauces on the side to supplement as well.
The Rice - Softer than Man Man. While I do prefer rice with a little bite, I can appreciate this softer variety complementing the crispy charred outer crust of the grilled Unagi. It had a lot of sauce-soaking ability so that was a plus.

The Wasabi - No fresh Wasabi root given that we can grate ourselves but it tasted fresh and serving it to us pre-grated does save us the time, but I do admit I like the novelty of grating it myself.
One notable difference in the menu here is the lack of Eel-based side dishes. Man Man does offer crispy Eel bones and Eel Livers (which I absolutely adore), so plus points to Man Man kf you are looking for a holistic offering.

Overall we are impressed by Unagiya Ichinoji and will be more than happy to come again. The eel is fantastic, and my cravings were satisfied.

Herbal Roasted Duck - Wonderful flavours, you clearly taste the hint of five spice, anise and of course the key ingredient, angelica root. Wonderfully balanced.
2. Char Siew - I've been eyeing a Char Siew with a good degree of caramelization and fat, this one was great! The meat had a bit of bite as well, which I believe is important to give the chew a little structure. Afterall, I am still eating meat!

Great place to go for Roast Duck and Char Siew if you're in KSL mall! Their congee is good too!

Foie Gras is excellent and goes well with the rice, very rich. The beef was a slight disappointment as it lacked the flavour and was a little too chewy for my liking. ๐Ÿ”ธ

Their beancurd is extremely smooth. Had a cold glass of soy milk as well, which paired very nicely with freshly prepared dough sticks (you tiao). First time trying the toast with floss and egg, and it was surprisingly great! A wonderful supper! The place is always bustling so be prepared to wait!
