One will definitely be for the mee soto/mee rubus at Inspirasi while the other at Jefri The Original Botak Chicken Rice. With a hilarious stall name and the healthier logo sign, there's no stopping me from ordering the Nasi Goreng Ayam ($3.50). The Muslim version is served with deep fried chicken and a tangy chilli sauce. Unfortunately, the rice is not as aromatic as the Chinese's but overall still a good plate of chicken rice.

Eating here felt like a cultural lesson on Hanoi. So there I was, expecting a side plate full of beansprouts and basil, but the friendly owners shared with me that it wasn't how it is served in Hanoi. Instead, what the locals get is a plate of fried doughnuts (or more familiarly known to us as youtiao) to dip into the flavourful soup. True enough, the place which was brimming with Vietnamese patrons all had youtiao on their tables. It isn't on the menu (yet) but it is definitely a must order!! The noodles were good (smooth & slippery) and you could really feel the love, time and effort put into cooking the soup. But dipping youtiao into it... was just an interesting experience I wish I had never missed out on.

A relatively new bistro within Bedok Point (or the mall in Bedok with the Chir Chir โ€” less confusion here), serving mostly western fare with pasta, mains such as burgers, beef, fish and poultry with a small selection of desserts available. Served with mesclun salad and atop mash. Quite impressive for a neighborhood mall bistro that serves such dishes for a reasonable price ($15.90 โ€” excludes 10% service charge); the duck confit probably sits well with those who doesn't like their duck to be too briny and salty โ€” this one maintains a bit of savoury flavours but it's more toned-down, yet the meat is juicy and tender with crisp skin on the outside; very delightful. The mash is a little denser but still smooth; much like the ones we grew to love when we were growing up. The accompanying sauce for the mash is also more subtle in flavour; intended to be so for its still quite thick and didn't seem to overpower the flavours of the duck. Mesclun salad was decent as well. Quite a place to visit if you are looking for a convenient yet reasonably-priced eatery to solve your western food cravings with if you have a little cash to spare.

This Bedok Point joint is easily the best place to accommodate a group of friends with varying food preferences. 5 Senses dishes out hearty Western plates that are bound to satisfy, well, all five senses. Salmon lovers, do not be distracted by the rest of the offerings and go straight for the Pan Seared Norwegian Salmon ($14.90). Burppler Jayson Yeo describes it as "a plate of salmon cooked perfectly with the flesh still juicy and moist and the skin seared so crispy". The pastas are pretty good too. What the unassuming Carbonara ($8.90) lacks in colour, it makes up in flavour. What's not to like about perfectly al dente spaghetti served with bacon and a wobbly onsen egg in the centre!
Avg Price: $15 per person

The dendeng is one to go for here, as it is spicy and flavourful, though it is a tad dry. The sambal goreng here is spicy but equally tasty. Go for the begedel that is packed with potato goodness!

Inside Geylang Serai hawker centre is a stall named "Kueh Talam Asli Kebab Tornado" (#02-148) with its short, fast-moving but ever-present queue. My curiosity was piqued so I joined it and got the Bingka Ubi, Putri Salat and Talam Chendol. The former two were smaller so a pair was counted as one piece.
There's a homemade goodness about these "kuehs". Really smooth-textured for the parts that needed to be, and the overall flavour was rich without being too sweet.

In that black "buah keluak" gravy drenching the rice are pieces of cow tongue which are decidedly chewy. Those black holey slices on the left of the plate are cow lungs, also known as "paru", which have a spongey texture. Understandably, this is the stuff of nightmares for some. But I lurrrrrvvve Nasi Rawon! A classic from Surabaya, East Java, it comes as a standard set with aforesaid cow organs, sambal cuttlefish, a small "begedil" (seasoned mashed potato ball), "tempeh" (fermented soya bean patty), "sambal belachan" and "serundeng" (dry-fried grated coconut). This came from "Sajisi Tradisi" located at unit #02-117 inside the Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre but you can easily find Nasi Rawon at quite a number of stalls.

I have long wanted to try Kacang Pool after seeing many Malay folks at this hawker centre tucking into it with gusto. Today was the day I finally got around to ordering one (with an egg) from "Kacang Pool Mustafa" (#02-118).
The thin, non-spicy brown gravy that's bulked up by mashed kidney beans wasn't starchy at all. Lifting it from one-dimensional mildness were pungent raw onions, sliced green chillies and fresh lime juice. To eat, I tore off pieces of the warm, toasted bread roll, swished them through the Kacang Pool before popping the gravy-soaked bread in my mouth.
Would I have this again? Absolutely. It's comfort food that's simple, unique and tasty.

There's something comforting about tearing into these crisp-edged, thick and fluffy-centred "appoms" with my bare fingers. Made fresh, these warm delicious discs taste so simple yet good dipped in the neon bright orange sugar. Get them at "G. S. Oli Thosai and Food Stall" at unit 02-138. Minimum order is 2 pieces.

This is the best spinach-and-three-egg dish I've had.
