I seldom have dinner at this hawker centre (I'm usually here in the daytime), so perhaps "Foon's Thai Recipe" stall (#01-65) has been around for a while but it's my first time noticing it. I decided to order a bowl of dry noodles to try since it looked promising.
Unlike Singaporean and Malaysian styles of "wanton" mee, there's no chilli "sambal", tomato ketchup or dark soya sauce anywhere to be seen. However, I found the clear, light and sweet-ish sauce that the springy noodles were dressed in, to be really tasty. Of course the glistening bits of crunchy fried pork lard helped as well :) For those looking to dial up the heat of their noodles, there's sour chilli sauce, dried chilli flakes and pickled green chilli available.
As I was there around 8.30pm, just before she closed for the day, the hawker said to me that the "char siew" had run out and was it ok if she gave me extra "wantons" instead. That turned out to be a good thing - those "wantons" were large, juicy and delicious.

sometimes when i cannot afford to head to the $4mil char siew place, i make do with what is nearby to wreck my heart with some heart-stopping fattening char siew. red hill hawker is decent but i always insist on 半肥廋 cut. consistency seems to be a problem here though - good fattening parts on some days, bad tougher than usual on others.

Peranakan food! One of my fav cuisine! The food at Candlenut is good. No MSG added but still bursting with flavours. Ambience is good and the service's great!

Buah Keluak - Rich & earthy Buah Keluak ice cream on a bed of salted caramel, chocolate crumble & chilli specks, topped with warm milk chocolate espuma. An interesting take on the key ingredient in ayam buah keluak, cleverly made into a dessert by Chef Malcolm Lee.

I must say that buah keluak and chocolate goes so well together & I enjoyed this unique dessert.

Crab meatballs & bamboo shoots in rich chicken broth. I always order Bakwan Kepiting whenever I'm at a Peranakan restaurant. Candlenut's BK was decent. Out of the many BK I have had, Chilli Padi's version left the deepest impression on me. PS: Where else can I find good Bakwan Kepiting? Hmmm.

Not really a fan of char siew because the ones that I have tried are either too sweet or dry. Well, this plate of char siew + roast pork just changed my mind.

The char siew slightly charred, caramelized exterior is not cloying sweet, meat's tender & flavorful with layers of fat & meat. I must say that it's the best char siew I have eaten. So good that I bought some home for the parents!

Ask for lean meat if you are not a fan of fats. But trust me, char siew with a layer of fat tastes much better!

The best part about roast pork is the crackling! Pork belly with slight hint of five spice & crispy skin, anyone?

Do visit Yee Kee for some mind blowing char siew! Totally worth the calories & the trip down!

PS: Uncle is very cute, friendly & generous! A very nice & humble elderly couple who makes good char siew, roast pork & roast duck!

Best in town. .

Some might not know among all the roasted meat, Char Siew is one of the hardest to master. To achieve the flavorful and char-ed layer and soft and tender meat, take years to master and even more patient! Char Siew require long hours of slow roast and a constant spread of char Siew sauce. .

The char Siew wasn't as sweet compared to the rest. For only S$36 per KG, definitely consider as a Good buy. .
