The Messy Mexican ($14) is the best kind of mess. The beef patty is drenched in an amazeballs chilli con carne (Mexican beef chilli) - you're going to be mopping the plate clean with this one. For those who prefer a classic burger, the No. 36 is the perfect choice. If you find yourself longing for a simple burger after work in a convenient area, this is it.

If you thought Tiong Bahru had enough cafes, you thought wrong. With the opening of Whisk and their signature lemon meringue tart, you'd be glad that this cafe has joined the party. As Burpple Tastemaker Chua Xing Wei remarks, "Lemon curd was tangy enough but still maintained a bit of egginess for a bit of sweetness. Fluffy torched meringue was not cloying sweet and added a subtle sweetness to the tart." Located right opposite Tiong Bahru Market, you'd want to add this place to your cafe-hopping list of the area. Make sure you try their macarons, lemon tarts, and cheesecakes!

Ok, we're gonna close one eye, and consider the humble Swiss roll as a form of cake. Simple yet extremely delicious, we love how good things come in a roll. These classic Swiss rolls are perfect for a simple afternoon tea with the family, with traditional flavors like kaya, durian and mango. Those who queue for these rolls often buy 5 to 10 rolls at a go, distributing them among family members and colleagues. We recommend you do the same!

I finally came to taste this famous dish for myself. So does it live up to its reputation? Oh yes indeed! The chilli is fantastic - very fragrant, complex and spicy. I love the way the soft-boiled egg coats the noodles when you toss everything together. The egg brings a certain softness to each bite which contrasts beautifully with the fresh, crisp "ikan bilis". Plus they add a lot of ingredients for a $5 bowl too. Looks like they have a new regular customer in me :)

Mellben needs no introduction to all crab lovers. The crab bee hoon has addictively rich, creamy sauce that keeps people coming back for more, despite the insanely long queues. Besides the excellent crab, go for the Salted Egg Pork Ribs, and Salad You Tiao. Don't forget to order some greens to balance this meal ;) Make reservations ahead of time to avoid queuing for 2 hours!

Famous for their Chao Tar (Burnt) Bee Hoon, this is a great spot in a central area for a midnight snack. Share the nicely browned and flattened bee hoon topped with crunchy lard and brimming with wok hei, along with the Seafood Toufu and Baby Bok Choy. If you're up for something spicy, go for the Hot & Sour Soup Thai Style. Look out for the Shing Boon Hwa Food Centre sign across from Sim Lim Tower.
