Very generous with gravy, beef rendang are on the sweet side. Worth trying, and will come back to try their other dishes.

For Kelantanese delights, look to this eatery for the likes of nasi dagang, laksa and keropok lekor. Dive straight for the popular Nasi Dagang (from 9.90), which sees a hefty amount of brown rice served with villager's salad, spicy sambal and protein of your choice – the Gulai Ikan Tongkol and Beef Rendang are their bestsellers. Feeling famished? Go for The Ultimate Nasi Dagang Capital (RM19.90) loaded with five types of meat and seafood!

Nasi dagang cost RM9.90. You can choose what you want to add on; fish, chicken, prawns or squid.

I chose the squid which cost RM11.90. The portion isn’t very big and it isn’t very spicy.

Ayam percik (Grilled spicy coconut milk chicken) is a Kelantanese Malay dish thats chicken grilled over charcoal and cooked percik style, which is basting with a spicy coconut milk gravy. Key ingredients in this dish include chilli, lemongrass, turmeric, cumin and coriander. What makes a good ayam percik is that the sauce needs to have a certain level of sweet and spiciness, but more importantly, creamy.

Nasi berlauk (rice with mixed dishes) is a Kelantanese Malay rice dish, consisting of Siamese white rice, served with a side of coconut turmeric curry known as gulai. This is normally served with a gulai ayam (chicken in coconut turmeric curry) or gulai ikan tongkol (skipjack tuna). The dish is also served with some gulai sayur (vegetables such as long beans and cucumber), sambal belacan, half a boiled egg and a sliver of salted fish. What sets the gulai apart is that its usually fragrant and a bit spicier than other regional gulai.
The nasi berlauk here is served with a choice of chicken, beef, fish, prawn or squid. The rice portion here is just right, where the Siamese rice is drenched in a rich sweet and savoury curry, which Malaysians will call ‘cukup lemak’ simply meaning “rich enough”. The chicken is cooked thoroughly with the flavour really seeping into its flesh, and the vegetables were sweet from the long cooking. A great way to eat nasi berlauk is for the spicy gulai to be drenched all over the rice for you to experience this dish in all its authenticity.

This Damansara Uptown joint is the Kelantanese restaurant's first offshoot in KL and for an authentic taste of their namesake dish, you will not be disappointed here. Bring a friend for the East Coast experience, and for company — it's a long walk from the nearest parking area. Have the staple nasi dagang, gravy-laden brown rice with a variety of proteins to choose from. The traditional pick is a Gulai Ikan Tongkol (mackerel tuna curry, RM8.90). Cooked in a spicy coconut gravy, the meaty fish has none of that unpleasant fishy taste and is a constant crowd pleaser. But we also heard great things about the Kelantanese Beef Rendang (RM9.90) that's light-bodied yet just as flavourful, if not more than the local variant. If you're not a stickler for tradition, opt to beef up your nasi dagang with rendang. For a full-on feast, get the Ultimate Nasi Dagang Capital (RM18.90) abundantly served with a portion of each side dish.
