Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei has won the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for the fourth year straight, so naturally I had to go and investigate if it was worthy of the almost-Michelin star, or if someone somewhere had been paid off.

Based on taste alone, the answer would be a resounding “why the hell doesn’t this have a Michelin star yet?” The laksa gravy was quite possibly the richest, most luscious laksa gravy I’ve ever tasted. With just enough heat to get you hot & bothered, it was remarkably redolent.

Zhen Shan Mei definitely lost the chance for a star with their portion sizes, however. This is the five buck portion, and apparently someone thought it would be an absolutely hysterical practical joke to call it the ‘medium’. It ain’t nothin’ but a snack, lemme tell you that right now.

The four cockles within apparently suffered from crippling dwarfism, and the solitary shrimp was decidedly lonely. There’s an alright amount of shredded chicken within, which is definitely un-traditional af, and an attempt was made to compensate by giving a bit more tau pok.

It certainly seems that the six dollar portion would be the only way to go. Considering just how doggone delicious this luscious laksa is, it’s probably worth it.

[Best Laksa]

1. Zhen Shan Mei Depot Road Claypot Laksa
(Alexandra Village Food Centre) ($4)

Listed in Michelin’s Guide 17 and 18, queue could still be seen at the stall. Take the claypot out and it would just be a decent bowl of laksa to us.
The gravy wasn’t the lemak type which was a minus point to us. Even so, it lacked the fragrance though the gravy was thick. The chilli didn’t help much either.
Flavour-wise, this didn’t work for us. Not sure how the claypot worked for others, but it wasn’t hot enough to keep the heat in the laksa. Strike-3 was a good enough conclusion for us.

Claypot laksa at alexandra food village. The laksa gravy is really thick and tasty -it is worth every bit of your calories!

It usually consists of thick wheat noodles or rice vermicelli in rich spicy coconut milk curry with toppings like chicken, prawn and fish. It is commonly found in Singapore!

Featuring the Laksa from Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa. They serve the Laksa in piping hot Claypot. It comes with Chicken slices and fish cakes. I like that they serve in Claypot as it keep the Laksa hot all the way to the last mouth of it. Especially good during the cold rainy weather.

Finally checked this claypot laksa off the list, and I was lucky to have waited for just 15 minutes for that.

Served in 3 sizes and 3 different types of noodles (yellow noodles/thick beehoon/thin beehoon), the claypot helps to keep the laksa warm better and it was really shiok to watch the gravy bubble when served. But other than that, I don’t really smell much additional aroma with the use of a claypot. The gravy is separated into 2 layers; 1 with a thicker lemak paste on top while a more watery soup soaking the beehoon. The chili does add heat bombs to the gravy which was originally spicy to begin with. Portion was slightly little for the price and given the long queue, I’d prefer going to elsewhere for a more satisfying laksa.
