🍰 Uji Matcha Hokkaido Roll
πŸ“Don Don Donki
πŸ“Œ Multiple Outlets
πŸ’° $9.80

Upon finding out that Don Don Donki had imported a whole bunch of new roll cakes, I knew I had to get my grubby hands on one of them. Compared to their famed souffle rolls, these Hokkaido rolls are much longer and thinner. I suppose it comes down to personal preference on whether length or thickness satisfies you more, but these small slices are really well portioned for a quick cakey bite.

The chiffon cake is soft, albeit not as soft as their souffle rolls. It's a bit spongier in texture. The cream has a pretty strong and milky matcha taste and the ratio of cake to cream is pretty balanced, compared to the souffle roll in which the cream dominates a large chunk of volume.

So far Don Don Donki hasn't let me down with any of their roll cakes! Though these Hokkaido rolls are a little pricey at $9.80 for a roll, the quality can be tasted. I still prefer their souffle rolls but these are worth a try!

⭐ Rating: 8.7/10 long and thin rolls

I much prefer the red bean as it blends well with the cream, with no weird taste. Could be abit too sweet for some though, without anything to balance it such as sourness or bitterness

The filling was v good, matcha was somewhat bitter. However the matcha has a raw taste which is rather common and that I didn't like.

The mochi was very chewy, it's not the best but it's better than I expected

This was basically perfect. The slightly chewy texture of the cheese with good bite, and the flavour was there as well. I can hardly imagine string cheese being better

The mixed swirl of matcha and vanilla soft serve costs just 40 cents more than the single flavoured vanilla soft serve ($2), and I would rather buy this mixed flavour than just the single one - because why just have 1 flavour when you can have 2? Don’t get me wrong, the vanilla flavour stand-alone was great. But the matcha was amazing as well. It was milky in its own right, creamy, and authentic. A strong matcha essence in half of that swirl, making the extra 40 cents worth it. At the same time, the matcha flavour combined well with the vanilla flavour, adding a slight creamy Hokkaido milkish node to it. Going to come back for this again and again!
