Quite the line-up from ISHIโ€™s Ulala lunch set ($80), I really enjoyed all the offerings - nothing overly fancy but each dish was well-executed. For the starter, it was a tangy number with the delicate Medai (Japanese Butterfish) served with a light ponzu sauce and grated radish. Next, for the 7 piece sushi course, there were the young sea bream, botan ebi, yellowtail, aburi medai, akami marinated with soya sauce and topped with yuzu peel, smoked Spanish mackerel with mustard seed, and lastly a melty chutoro. Each nigiri was exquisite and lightly dressed to accentuate the natural flavours of the ingredient. Their shari (vinegared rice) was also nicely balanced and served to highlight the yummy cuts.

My friend and I also got their Wagyu Beef Steak ($68/100g) to share. Sweet, savoury and beefy, the protein was presented in the most intriguing way as they arrived as bite-sized rolls. Served with crisp Hokkaido garlic and snow salt, the thin cut was uber melty, succulent and tender. Although the portion was indeed small(pictured is 50g), the beautifully marbled and lusciously fatty beef was something to savour slowly.

Known to be a firm favourite at ISHI, their Special Rice Bowl, at a supplement of $40, was really indulgent. Loaded with tons of chopped tuna, the bowl was completed with leek, pickled radish, ebi (as they were out of their usual hand picked seasonal crab), house marinated salmon roe, and fresh sea urchin. Brimming with all the seafood-y goodness, the umami flavours came out a little strong for me but well worth the splurge as it was a relatively generous serving. Texture-wise, I would have preferred it more if they added some crunch.

Not to forget the super soft jiggly mochi dessert that made for a good end to the meal.

Top up $40 for a delicious special rice bowl of superstars - uni/kani/negitoro/ikura!

Part 3

Dessert was the softest Warabi Mochi I had and certainly didn't expect to be surprised again after the splendid mains.

Part 2

Next was the negitoro uni ikura hairy crab rice bowl. The creaminess of uni and negitoro was infused with the hairy crab. The best uni ikura rice bowl I ever have. Highly recommend to pay the extra $30 for the hairy crab.

Part 1

Ishi at Intercontinental Robertson Quay. High quality is maintained consistently from the start to the end of the meal. Highly recommend to try the botan set for lunch.

Started off with the flounder and uni combi as the appetizer - they paired so well tgt.

The sushi served were Meichidai, Shima Aji, Botan Ebi, Akami, Engawa, Nodoguro , Otoro. Every piece is exquisite with the Nodoguro the most memorable. Charcoal was used to torch the Nodoguro before served, allowing it to melt in the mouth with complex flavours.

I always add the wagyu beef to my lunch course- Melt in your mouth Japanese wagyu rolls, served with hokkaido garlic and snow salt. I usually split the 100g with my dining companion cos even a small portion is rich and satisfying enough (pictured is 50g).

First sushiya out since phase 2 started!

Jul 2020:
*Appetiser : uni rolled in sea bream
*7 pc seasonal Nigiri sushi : 1) snapper 2) Pacific rudderfish 3) Aji hand roll 4) Akami zuke 5) Botan ebi 6) chutoro 7) hotate
*ikura mini rice bowl
*Dessert : warabi mochi

Our first time at Ishi and we were pleasantly surprised by how value-for-money and good this Omakase was. My take is to go for the $120 Botan menu instead of the $80 menu as you get 8 sushi (from 7) and you get an Ikura+Uni rice bowl (only Ikura in the other menu). We did not top up the rice bowl for extra negitoro and crab but this was well worth it! Oh, and we greedily topped up a side of Tempura ($35) and it was heavenly! Great place for a celebratory lunch ๐Ÿ˜

This is the best chawanmushi I've ever had. The buttery ankimo elevates the silky smooth chawanmushi with a savoury umami that delights. I would come back just for this...

Yet another lovely lunch, this time featuring seasonal giant clam so fresh it was still moving when the chef tapped it! I love that the sushi is served to you piece by piece here, like how it is done in proper sushiyas. You can also see how the fish completely covers the rice, also how a proper nigiri sushi should be done. For an ultra luxe experience, I recommend adding on the wagyu ($68++).

Ulala sushi course Aug 2019:
*Appetiser : flounder and endamame
*7 pc seasonal Nigiri sushi : 1) Sea bream 2) Yellow jack 3) Akami zuke 4) Giant Clam (Ishigaki Gai) 5) Botan ebi 6) Horse mackeral (aji) 7) Otoro
*ikura mini rice bowl
*Dessert : warabi mochi

Super affordable sushi lunch sets from $80++ (7pc) given that it's a proper sushiya, where each piece is served individually. It is well worth adding the special sushi bowl for additional $40++ due to the generous serving of fresh creamy uni, ikura, negitoro and shiro ebi (seasonal). If you do not top up you still get an ikura bowl as part of the set.

Ulala sushi course Apr 2019 : 1) Sea bream 2) flounder 3) akami zuke (seasoned tuna) 4) saba (mackeral) 5) scallop 6) kagoshima kuruma ebi (Japanese tiger shrimp) 7) otoro (tuna belly). Comes with appetiser (bonito), ikura rice bowl, Miso soup and dessert (warabi mochi).

All Japanese chefs here unlike my previous sushiya of choice, mitsuya, where it is luck of draw and you may get local chef with the totally inept knife skills.

One of the better sushi omakase set offered in Singapore. Chef Masaaki delivers on every single piece of sushi served. The menu also include some of the chef's creative flavors to spice up the sushi experience. Definitely worth the try and I'll be going back soon.

Ishi is a recently opened Japanese restaurant in the same building as the Intercontinental Robertson Quay but is not technically part of the hotel.

I had the 7-piece sushi set ($48) from their lunch menu which came with a complimentary starter, soup and ice cream. It was not bad but Iโ€™m not sure it was worth $48. My lunch companion ordered the Chirashi + Chawanmushi set ($68) which seemed better value.

We also ordered a side of Tempura ($35) and though the ingredients were of high quality (there was eel tempura which Iโ€™ve never seen before), the batter was too thick for our liking.

Perhaps the omakase wouldโ€™ve been a better choice?

๐Ÿฃ The otoro - the last piece and rightfully so given its luscious decadence.

Notable pieces were:
๐Ÿฃ Marinated maguro from Nagasaki with yuzu - a citrus burst before the fish melted into the rice
๐Ÿฃ Tachiuo or silver belt fish - love the meaty yet clean texture
๐Ÿฃ Botan ebi - sweet and luscious
๐Ÿฃ Shima Aji - excellent rendition
๐Ÿฃ Sakura masu or cherry trout - salty and savoury, reminiscent of smoked salmon - not our fav
๐Ÿฃ Otoro - wagyu of fish that completely disintegrated; amazing ๐Ÿคฉ

Ok , those sea urchins and roes are satisfyingly sweet , needless to say . But i specially like to mention the principal source of this dish - the rice . Itโ€™s one of the better texture i love thus far , non sticky ,and as you chew on them , it gives softness . ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
