Ginger and miso braised chicken offal and vegetables, served with rice and pickles

Signature Motsunabe - The murky broth contains tripe, offal, tendons and intestines. As the broth comes to a boil, you’ll realize that the broth thickens and slowly turns into a stew.

Pretty impressed with whatever we have had at Motsu-Ya so made a return visit for the other dishes. Opted to go with the special of the day; sautéed pork with caramalised onions, the Buta Shogayaki Don is really delicious — tender pork slices that’s all savoury yet sweet from the caramalised onions atop the pearly short-grained rice. Very simple, very comforting indeed — even the Miso soup manages to impress as well; very well-rounded.

This one is really dependent on whether you like that crunchy bony texture! I’ve only had chicken cartilage one other time so I’m not exactly sure what’s good, but this had a decently well-seasoned fried coating.

Unlike the former, there’s no requirements of ordering alcohol. Hits and misses with a whole lot more offals on the menu than Nobu but still pretty decent overall.
Personal favourite would be the Motsuni ($6) & Sujini ($10), both of which were pretty similar with comfortingly sweet-savoury broth and a mix of chicken offals; while the latter was of very tender, braised beef tendon, with a dash of horseradish. Loved the daikon and konnyaku in them!!! My meal would probably have easily been settled with a bowl of rice to pair with either dishes.

One of my favourite side has got to be Zuri ($6), of chewy grilled gizzards with salt. We also had a couple of other dishes like the soy marinated liver which was too salty for my liking; Moyashi (salted bean sprouts, $4), Uzura (braised quail eggs, $4), Nankotsu (fried chicken cartilage, $8). All of which probably would’ve gone well with some alcohol 😛.

The offspring of the infamous Nobu-ya, Motsu-ya offers a more casual, no-frills setting to get your fix of Japanese comfort food. Their chirashi bowl came packed generously with seafood and it would have been great if not for the unseasoned, warm rice it was served with. This kinda resulted in a weird in between where some slices of fish got stuck in a state of hot in some spots and cold in others (cue Katy Perry). This would be something I’d be back for if only they changed the rice. 🍚
