For our carb fix, we went with Flat Rice Noodle(RM 2.50) and White Rice(RM 2.50). I'd say the flat rice noodles were the better choice, offering better value for money. The portion was just right for one person, and they were delightfully slurpy. The accompanying soup was heartwarming, especially when you add some of that fragrant chicken to it. It was a delicious end to the night.
No Ayam Tauge experience is complete without Buntong Beansprout(L)(RM 15). These crunchy, well-seasoned sprouts with sesame oil, soya sauce, and pepper were a must-order and as tasty and clean as expected.
We also decided to try the Meatball Soup(L)(RM 15). The soup itself was a standard chicken broth with nothing particularly noteworthy. However, the enormous pork meatball was a game-changer. It had a delightful springy, juicy, and tender texture, making it a great addition to the meal.
The Whole Chicken(RM 76) was quite sizable. It was expertly chopped and plated with a fragrant blend of sesame oil and soya sauce. The meat was succulent, and each bite left a delightful, savoury sensation on the palate, thanks to the flavourful sauce. The chicken's skin had the perfect bounce and was absolutely slurp-worthy. While the sauce was good, if I were to compare, I'd say I prefer the one at Cowan Street. However, when it comes to the meat, I think this place executed it better.
Yet another night, another Ayam Tauge spot to satisfy our cravings.
We were fortunate to arrive just in time to savour their chicken late at night. Three chickens were hanging there, patiently waiting for customers, and we promptly ordered two whole chickens to treat ourselves.

Expect nothing but perfectly done chicken meat (not too raw or too tough); fat and juicy beansprouts; really smooth horfun! Definitely a must-eat in Ipoh!
Crunchy and sweet bean sprout, tender white chicken. Their char siew is sweet. Something i like too. 👍🏻5/5
✔️so cheap yet so good, definitely going back again
📍Ipoh, #yybffIPOH 💲Damage: Rm13 per pax
When you're in Ipoh we eat Ipoh food. Restaurant Ong Kee, What else can I say 😊👍 Chicken is smooth and tender, crunchy bean sprout mixed with nice bowl of hot noodle (Hor Fun) just made my day. Burp 😜👅
Located just opposite Lou Wong, Onn Kee is my go-to restaurant for nga choi gai. The steamed chicken was tender, soy sauce was nice to go with rice, though a tad bit oily.
They ran out of oily rice when we went at 5.30pm, so we had hor fun instead. The smooth, translucent hor fun in the sweet and flavoursome soup was a delight to have. I'm not a fan of bean sprouts and would normally not have them but there's just something about the dish that I can't say no to.
Total cost: RM72 for 5 pax.
芽菜鸡沙河粉 (bean sprout chicken hor fun), the smoothest hor fun I've had so far, just slides down my throat. So good!

There are numerous “famous” brands and tourists usually will flock to the ones that are highly recommended on the internet. However, to me, the best way to suss out the better ones are to talk to the locals and specifically the drivers, who will tell you more than what you already know. During this short trip, I had this dish twice from two different places that are recommended by two different drivers, and both, though slight different, are equally good on its own rights. For this visit, I was at Restoran Tauge Ayam Ong Kee, opposite from the bigger boys of bean sprouts chicken, but I don’t think they will lose out in the flavour department. Costing RM 16 for a single pax set, it comes with one of the most succulent and tender steamed kampung chickens, a bowl of the slurp worthy kway teow and a plate of that magical bean sprouts. This is a place that you have to try it at least once if you are a making a pit stop in Ipoh.

Lou Wong & Onn Kee are popularly-frequented restaurants for this dish. We decided on Onn Kee because online research seems to favour this more than Lou Wong.
