Went to sanpoutei as I haven’t been for over a year. The food was ok, but among the least satisfying of the ramen joints in the orchard road area. There are many better ones, at Ion, Paragon, Tanglin shopping centre. Avoid the Onigirazu; it falls apart easily.

𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐱 𝐍𝐢𝐤𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐨 (3.5 ⭐️; $16) - Simmered over 8 hours and combined with their original miso blend, we enjoyed the rich chicken broth enhanced by the soybean aroma but would have appreciated it slightly less salty. We were let down by the tough stewed pork belly slices. In terms of texture, we liked these less than the tsukumen’s as they lost some of their firmness and spring, probably from soaking up the soup.

The ramen spot that made me fall in love with shoyu broths and has since been one of my favourite to-go places for a satisfying bowl! The broth looks unassumingly clear, but it’s light yet umami rich, with a very pronounced dried sardines stock base. You get springy curly ramen noodles with aburi chashu, bamboo shoots, seaweed and half an egg. Only thing is that the chashu sometimes are a little too fatty for my liking.

For each of their ramen, they are available in a range of prices, depending on the amount of toppings you want.

Other than ramen, there are a few different appetisers. First time trying the agedashi tofu! It came with mushrooms and grated radish that had a touch of spice. Unlike the usual sort that has the tofu come crisp, these ones had a more chewy soft potato starch coating. Tofu cubes were silky smooth and the broth was comforting. I would actually request got the spiced radish to be served separately next time though, as I liked the broth on its own. A bit pricey, but we enjoyed it!

💬 One of my favourite tsukemen around! The noodles were chewy with a nice bite to them and always cooked perfectly. They know you would love the noodles so the noodles automatically comes in a x1.5 portion. The broth is made with dried sardines and bonito which jam-packs it with umami-ness and a robust flavour! I'm already salivating just by writing this!

(Unfortunately I can't upload two photos into a single post here, but no worries the photo of the dipping broth is on Instagram, go check it out!)
