I finally tried their nasi lemak after many fruitless attempts.
❤️ their chicken rendang! It is incredibly soft [I could easily tear apart the meat with a fork] and the tender meat is infused with the flavour of spices. The rendang is on the spicy 🥵 side but I manage to survive off.

The chocolate ganache drizzle atop, elevate the moist marble cake to a whole new level with a rich chocolate flavour and luscious texture. And if you’re a chocoholic [like me], you will surely ❤️ this!

Ordered their Kaya Toast with Butter ($3.40), Kopi C ($2.60) and added on soft boiled eggs ($2.30) for breakfast. Wanted to try their Curry Chicken but was unfortunately sold out and it was on nearly everyone’s table. Their toast was nicely toasted and spread with a generic tasting kaya. They were pretty generous with the butter and the eggs were perfectly cooked. The coffee was a little on the bland side. No GST and service charge, but I don’t think I’ll return as the service was quite bad and food was overpriced.
Sunset Railway Cafe is a spot that bears a little bit of nostalgia for me — had visited them when they first opened at Clementi Arcade and is one of the few places that utterly enjoyed working on some school projects at a location not too far away from school, whilst enjoying some Peranakan kueh and local coffee. Still remembered how they were a little empty during the weekday afternoons back then, but they are now only opened four days a week, and only from 8am to 3pm — pretty surprised to find the cafe being ar maximum capacity when I made the trip on a weekend morning; glad to see how they seemed to have turned into the friendly neighbourhood coffeehouse that residents cannot get enough of.
My fondest memory of the food served here would probably be the Pulut Tekkan; think of it as a deconstructed Kueh Salat where the Kaya mousse is served on the side from the blue pea flower-infused glutinous rice. Wasn’t quite intending to go for that this time round however, and was attracted to the Kueh Ambon instead. Liked how the honeycomb layers are so distinct in this one — the light sweetness of honey perfuming through the entire kueh as one tears of layers of its soft, chewy interior to savour; satisfaction indeed especially when paired with a cup of Kopi on the side for breakfast.
It’s been a long while since I have returned, but those warm and friendly vibes are still in its truest form — bonds formed over the years with regular patrons from the neighbourhood surrounding it, it is little wonder how Sunset Railway Cafe had seemingly become a favourite hangout with the residents around. No doubt it is located a little far flung away from the more common areas of Clementi, but I guess that is also why this makes Sunset Railway Cafe not just simply an eatery, but also a community surrounding the folks who patronise them regularly.
Pulut Tekan with Kaya ($4.50)
Back here specially for this dessert!
Perf combination with their homemade Kaya and Coffee
Really loved the softness, fragrance and texture of their desserts. Would go back again to try more.
It was a decent slice of sugee cake but I'm not sure if I would pay $5.30 for this small slice again when there are better renditions available. For one, it could be slightly less sweet and do without the sugary lemon drizzle which was a distraction from the buttery and nutty aroma of the cake. Another problem was with the texture - it was dry and crumbly around the sides even though the centre was faultlessly moist. Service was excellent - the staff are very welcoming and friendly. I would be happy to visit this cafe again to try their other offerings, but I would probably pass on the sugee cake.
Light and fluffy bread that is well-toasted with generous spread of light green hue pandan-flavoured kaya & slabs of butter.
The photo doesn’t do justice to the toast though.

After a long hectic week at work (Had probably lost at least 0.5 kg over the past 6 days), it’s time to take a break and reward myself.
First stop - Back @ Sunset Railway Cafe to try out their Sugee cake with lemon drizzle & attap-seed ice-cream. A classic favourite and it sure tastes as good as it looks!

The rice vermicelli topped with fried shallots, chopped tau pok, two prawns and hard-boiled egg is soaked in a spicy, tangy, sour and savoury gravy [No chives, please]. It’s simple yet satisfying!

I haven’t eaten a lot of kueh lopes in the past but this lovely bite-sized glutinous rice served with grated coconut and ample gula melaka is a dessert that I will surely be back for more!

Very good kaya, very good kueh! Will totally come back for a tea time treat. The Kopi Siew Dai was excellent - very fragrant and just strong enough.
tea break because food like these. is like atasfied kopitiam tea break but you don't mind the extra bucks at all. pulut tekan ($4), a peranakan glutinous rice cake here is paired with their home made artisan kaya here - it was light, very soothing, and that mellowed sweetness that you forget you are downing glutinous rice shot one after another. sugee cake ($4.80) is another their signature - coarser almonds here lends a hearty bite to this rich cake with a lemon drizzle that complements it so well. best to down one bite with a sip of your favourite heartland kopi each time!
feeling selfish and just want to have this kopi hideout to myself. but i am for the greater good. free parking ☑, free wifi ☑, good kopi? ☑ ☑. am a FAN already. plus they remember me! ok, like who will ask to pay kopi with cc right? still cursing myself for not bringing the wallet out. but @sunsetrailway_cafe made the day better!
Posted this once, and that was the very first time I have walked into Sunset Railway Cafe. When the craving for Kueh kicks in and you need a spot near school to have a quick coffee break that has local Kopi and WiFi — Sunset Railway Cafe is just the spot I would end up hitting. Essentially like a Kueh Salat, but you get to smear the eggy blob of Kaya (which acts like a Pandan mousse that is on a Kueh Salat) atop the beautiful diamonds of Glutinous Rice speckled with blue hues of the Butterfly Pea all by yourself. Each portion of glutinous rice comes tacky with a good bite; certainly a good item to pair alongside a cup of Kopi while working on the laptop over their WiFi.
Quite surprised by how this went! Sure, the long grain rice isn't quite as flavourful as Selera Rasa but I must say I am impressed with the lightness and fluffiness of the rice without being too heavy in flavour – makes it actually very easy to finish. The sambal was sweet without trying to set fire to the tongue, yet carries a easy amount of spiciness to handle. Most stuff on the plate are pre-prepared before serving, hence could be rather lukewarm, but I liked the Rendang Chicken most; succulent and tender with a flavours of the spices prominent for it wasn't overwhelmingly spicy. Quite a good place to hit for lunch and to work on some assignments over their free WiFi during that odd four-hour break in between lectures.
A light tea break after an afternoon Saturday class. A little pricey at $2.20 ala-carte for you get a slice halved, but must say that the toasting was well-executed for it was crisp, yet light and fluffy without resorting to the cracker-like brown loaves that Ya Kun uses. A good proportion of Kaya and butter resides within, which gives it a good balance between being buttery while exuding the fragrance of coconut jam.
Back again for their Sugee Cake; hadn't had much Sugee Cake in my life before so can't tell how a good one should be like. Homebaked by themselves, the Sugee Cake was light both in texture and flavour, speckled with shards of nuts within and drizzled with lemon sugar glazing atop for a bit of zing. The accompanying vanilla ice-cream is mediocre at best; probably came out of a tub easily gotten at supermarket but it is the Sugee Cake that is the main subject here. Starting to like the vibes here; a modest neighbourhood cafe that's homely and sincere in service, taking care of their patrons well and have small talk with those that come through the door. They also have free wifi here too; much appreciated for those moments when you need to do some urgent work with a laptop around.
Despite the name of this dish there is really no feeling of getting "Tekan" by this dish. Pretty apt for a tea time treat, the Pulut Tekan is your Peranakan Kueh-Kueh featuring glutinous rice with Kaya; albeit of a deconstructed version where you get to slather the Kaya on your own instead. The Kueh comes a little tacky, but fresh without being sticky or mushy, while the Kaya carries a whiff of coconut flavour amongst the sweetness. Apart from this, Sunset Railway Cafe also serves mains like Nasi Lemak, Curry Chicken and Mee Siam. Would probably head here again to check the other mains out since it's so near school!
or close enough. always enjoy their homemade kaya!
