I always get asked where to go good and affordable omakase. Surely, not many can do the fine dining Japanese omakase often, yet the cheap omakase are usually below average Japanese food.

One place that I'll always recommend is this Japanese restaurant along Tanjong Pagar helmed by chef Kenji Okumura, who's trained in the art of Kaiseki by master chefs in Japan. His menu pays homage to the artistic tradition with sophisticated nuances of fine Japanese multi-course meal, while presenting them in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere.

Omakase dinner starts at $150. While the modest, kappou-style cuisine is offered in three fixed menus for dinner ranging from $60 to $120, the Omakase set lunch treat starts from a digestible S$50.

I had seasonal menu and course dinner. Quality of food, taste, decoration with seasonal leaves and flowers, plates and hospitality were fantastic!

This is like the movie inception played on an 8-course omakase, because one of the courses came with 8 dishes.. like an omakase within an omakase.

A mixture of different Japanese rice was cooked in a stock of bonito and assorted Japanese vegetable in the claypot, before adding in slices of A5 Ohmi Wagyu tenderloin and sea urchin (additional) into the kettle rice. The rice got much of its flavour from the bonito stock, with sweetness from the carrots, and those right underneath the tenderloin was rich with fats and juice from the Wagyu. I love the mushrooms in there too, which added lots of crunch and texture to the rice.

Missing pretty much all the dishes I tried at Teppan Kappou Kenji. Maybe I should go back for the promo :$18 for 3 seafood items (pick from Japanese oysters from mie, tiger prawns, salmon and tuna).

We tried 12 dishes and most were really good! This A5 Wagyu Aburi Sushi ($18, 2 pcs) was of course the star but really, I wouldn't mind trying the other dishes again! Prices are pretty affordable too. Eg they have a Wagyu Hamburg stew for $15, which together with rice would be good as a meal. They also have express lunch including chawan mushi with each set, starting from $12.
