Unkai has been around for some time but I have only made a trip down to check them out recently.

They were pretty much sold out by the time I got there so I tried the comparatively "boring' salmon and teriyaki chicken bento instead.

I liked that the salmon was not overcooked and dry and the sauces was not saccharine sweet. The chicken was also tender and juicy.

Fresh sashimi, oysters and scallops are certainly not dishes you would find in a hawker centre. Hopefully I get a chance to try them the next time I visit Unkai!

Unkai is where you get some Japanese foods at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre, serving bento set, udon and hotplate.

I was looking forward to the meal here but a bit disappointed with it instead. The dory fish was much harder than the usual soft meat you could expect.

Recommended on NOC FoodKing videos quite some time back ago, I knew I had to try this if I’m here at Old Airport Road Food Centre. Priced at $15 for half a dozen of grilled scallops, I wasn’t disappointed at all by the quality and taste. Most of them were pretty plump too (except for one 😂)!

Old Airport Road Food Centre has been known for having lots of great food with a variety of cuisines. We decided to try their don for something different and uncommon for a hawker centre setting.

For $5 it came with a huge slab of chicken and a good amount of rice. The presentation had good effort for hawker centre Japanese food too. The taste was not as delicious as how it looks though but for the price point it was still pretty decent.

Salmon Hotplate Set ($4.50 to 8.50)
I heard my colleague he prefer their don or hotplate for their japanese cuisine instead of their udon is so-so only. I will be trying their don or meal set again before leaving the area soon. The hotplate is like pepper lunch style but they put salmon on hotplate instead of mixing rice. I prefer the ingredients cook hotplate directly and not mixing with rice. That's made the dish more unique and special to eat with and also highly recommend for different variety of don or hotplate.

Soba was nice, tempura was crisp although the batter on the prawn was a bit thick. For 8 bucks, its worth a try!
