928 Yishun Laksa is a popular Laksa shop that has been around for a very long time.
A highlight for this bowl of Laksa must be its broth, which features a strong prawn flavour that is unlike any other Laksa around. It is more savory than lemak like many other famous Laksa places. Accompanying the broth are fresh cockles, and the usual combination of ingredients. What I like about this place is they give crabstick as well which is a step away form tradition.
Overall a very flavorful bowl of Laksa, can be quite spicy for those with low spice tolerance. Must try if around the area. May not be the best in sg, but definitely the best in the North
$4.50 for small (enough for 1 person meal)
Very warm and comforting bowl of Noodle soup. The lor mee is nice and chewy, and the soup is thickened with corn starch, and gooey. Nothing particularly exciting about it, but something i would eat (or have eaten) again
A pleasant, simple and humble dish.
Heng hua is a hidden gem nestled among some HDB flats at the back of Yishun mrt, serving Putien (place in China) food.
Their Stewed tofu featured minced up tofu with a mixture of root vegetables, mince meat and finished off with egg. It was very comforting and warm, and the flavours of the tofu and veges worked well together. I would say the dish itself is a bit bland, but that's intended and fitting given the flavour profile of the dish. It works to bring out the nature flavours of the tofu.
Overall a very nice dish. The red wine sauce was nice and deep and the dish was seasoned well to balance the tartness of the sauce. The fresh tagliatelle gave a nice egg flavour, and the beef was tender. Good dish with nothing much to fault (could be slightly more salty).
Used Burpple Beyond 1 for 1 (UP $26). What left a sour taste to the meal was that you are charged for the service charge for the free item as well, so its not really a 1 for 1...
Eleven strands is a cafe that has been quite a trend recently, with some around me giving rave reviews about the place.
Starting with looks: the plating was decent, could do with the elements being packed tighter on the plate. The individual elements in the dish were done well. Nice to see the pork with char grill marks, and a large enough portion (even though it was slightly dry, slightly overdone), the sauce tasted good, apples were nicely caramelised.
However, the dish overall was not cohesive, and not balanced. There were too many sweet notes, with the apples, pickled onions. The pork and mashed potatoes were not salty enough to balance it. The cream based sauce was also not appropriate as it has an element of sweetness in its balance; a brown sauce would have added a more savoriness to balance the overall dish.
One of their signature dishes, a definite must try if you eat here.
Overall very enjoyable dish. The chicken pieces were tender, and smooth with some cornstarch on the surface, but not excessive that it loses the bite. The sauce was well made, with the savoriness of soy sauce with a fragrant sesame oil taste.
Very affordable as well, costs about 5 bucks for a small portion
老王(lau Wang) claypot delights has enjoyed some fame serving up affordable claypot dishes in the area. If I am not wrong, there are other branches as well.
One of their specialty is their Brinjal. Very homely taste, nicely balanced dish of savouriness of the sauce with the sweet gooey eggplant. Very good with rice as well. The other side veggies with the dish, liek the onions were also nicely caramelised with the raw edge taken off
Price of a small pot is about 5 bucks which is a steal.
Very enjoyable meal. The chilli oil bringing forth the umami and spiciness from Broad bean sauce and dried chillis. There was little to no numbing flavour from the typical mala, good for those who don't like that part of mala
The fish was well seasoned and grilled prior, giving a nice smoky flavour. The oils of the fish were also nicely rendered and added to the fragrance that would not have been achieved by just cooking the fish in the broth.
The sides of Chinese long cabbage and potatoes did a great job absorbing all the flavours. Overall an excellent meal. Was so spicy but yet addictive giving a masochistic pleasure bite after bite

Bari Uma serves an honest bowl of hakata style pork broth ramen.
Very good bowl of ramen. The soup is thick, with the right collagenous consistency. The soup is cloudy with a good amount of oil emulsified within it. There is a bit of a bloody taste though, but not something that affects the dish too much.
The pork is well marinated and seasoned. Noodles are nice and Al dente, and according to them made handmade.
Note: they changed location from below block 18, to the coffeeshop opposite: block 19 lorong 7 toa payoh
What can I say, everything was executed just right. The noodles are fried adequately before adding the broth to remove the alkaline taste in the yellow noodles. The ratio of yellow and white noodle is ideal. The broth is flavorful with savoury notes from the prawn shells and heads, balanced with sweet umami flavour from pork (stock similar to the famous Hokkien mee at Lorong 1 toa payoh which likes you to come everyday). Enough starch released from the noodles made the dish cohesive as a whole
Lastly the ingredients are really fresh! Prawns and squid are quite good quality for the price.
Would highly recommend. All the details were done right, bringing it close to a perfect plate of Hokkien mee. Maybe the only small thing that could be better is that it lacks a bit of wok hei (fire not big enough?)
Nice and refreshing. Would recommend getting your own ingredients. Notable nice ingredients include:
Winter melon shaved ice very nice and refreshing, grass jelly is one of the smoothest around, the taro and sweet potato balls are nice and chewy, but would recommend the mini balls as the big ones can get a bit dense so flavour cannot penetrate through.
