Doesn't look like much but this is the love of my life RIGHT HERE. I love jianbing so much when I was staying in Beijing for a bit I had it almost thrice a week...... Quintessential breakfast food there, but almost impossible to find here - trust me I've searched everywhere. It's tough to get the right sauce here - the only other store I've found dumps hoisin sauce over premade jianbing wrapper and calls it a day. Blasphemy!! But here, the sauce is just right: a little sweet, salty and very suited to the singaporean palate I feel. Skin and the čč (fried wanton wrapper) are commendable as well. Do give this a try!! I mean both times I've been here everyone is just lining up for the cheap malatang and at this point I'm just really confused by why mala and not jianbing took Singapore by storm these past few years. Its a big trend in other countries and the lack of it here is slightly offensive. Oh well. Enjoy!!
I love how this stall doesnāt bundle their vegetables together, so you can actually take as little leafy veg as you want. I also really love green and red chillies stuffed with minced meat! Although thatās common in ytf stalls, I havenāt seen that in any other MLXG or ma la tang stalls so I had to grab some to try. They have quite a wide variety of ingredients, so youāre pretty much spoiled for choice here.
The pricing system is more straightforward here as everything is $1.80/100g, makes more sense to get meat over vegetables but I really enjoy vegetables nowadays so my loss hahaha. This bowl came up to $11.80, not too bad!
Thereās also a few different types of broth - for today I went for the signature bone broth. I thought this would be non-spicy as they had another ma la broth, but apparently you have a choice of spice level for this broth too! I went for medium spicy.
They take quite a while to prepare the bowl as everything seems to be prepared individually in small batches and cooked in small pots, maybe itās better overall for the taste? Either way, I predict it would be quite a long wait if there was a queue.
The bone broth is super flavourful and yummy. We could still detect the sweetness from the bone despite the spiciness. Medium spicy was really shiok too! We were sweating after a while. While but each spoonful was so addictive we couldnāt stop. Thankfully there wasnāt much numbing sensation as I donāt enjoy that in ma la tang since I do intend to drink the soup. Overall, I really enjoyed this bowl of ma la tang and would patronise it again!
Chinatown Point added lots of new food stalls to their basement 1 area and Ah Xin Malatangās one of them! Orderingās simple: 1) Pick what youād like at a standard $1.80/100g (minimum 300g), 2) Select your soup out of the 6 they have like mala, herbal, wild mushroom, etc., 3) Choose your spice level and 4) Decide if you want to upgrade to a set meal at an extra $4 for a Chinese pancake (ē 鄼ęå) or $4.80 for that and a drink.
Price is affordable compared to other mala tang around, but it wasnāt as flavourful as Gong Yuan Mala Tang thatās at Orchard Xhange, Westgate and Heartland Mall. Ah Xinās tasted a little more nutty with a more muted pork bone broth base, but itās also not as salty. Ingredients were pretty fresh but preparation takes quite a while.
