Nice cozy spot to chill with family and friends. They serve a range of delectable Korean bingsu, from traditional injeolmi bingsu to durian mango bingsu.
In picture: Black Sesame Bingsu w/ almond flakes and red bean (RM15.90). The texture of the shave ice is surprisingly flaky and soft, and has the right level of sweetness.
Apart from bingsu, they offer 100% natural ice cream and sorbet too. Though pricey for shaved ice, I would be back to try the other flavours.
This massive Mango Cheese Bingsu (RM16.90) is a gorgeous bowl of caramelised mangoes, cubes of perfectly baked cheesecake, raisins and a scoop of mango ice cream. What wow-ed me the most was the texture of the shaved ice, which struck the perfect balance between flaky and milky. It is definitely one of the best bingsus I’ve had.
This massive bowl of Mango Cheese Bingsu (RM16.90) came nearly arranged with caramelised mangoes, cubes of nicely done cheesecake, raisins and a scoop of mango ice cream. What wow-ed me was probably the cleverly executed shaved ice texture. It had the perfect balance of flakiness and milkiness - definitely one of the best ones I've had.
빙수 (BingSu), Korea's favourite summer time treat, seems to be taking Malaysia by storm with places serving bingsu left right and centre as Koreans get a fix of their hometown love while people like js jisy flock at the concept of a different type of ice kacang which probably costs thrice the price of a normal ice kacang.
Bingsu, meaning "ice water" literally, is Korea's version of an ice kacang with the common one being patbingsu (핕빙수) which means red bean shaved ice.... which is what ice kacang is... of course Bingsu's nowadays come with a lot of flavours, with the current famous on in Korea being the iljeomi bingsu (일절미 빙수) since it's topped with multi grain powder, it appeals to the Korean market that craves for a "healthy dessert" or just like the taste in general. Another famoua on in Korea right now is of course, 망고 빙수 (mango bingsu) that focuses on... you guessed it - mango, since Mango is freaking expensive in Korea.
Bingsu cafe has been buzzing in the depths of my conciousness for quite some time. So when my Korean friend who came back from Australia for a visit told me she wanted bing su, the gates of the heavens rained upon me with an opportunity.
The place itself was of course nice. Simplistic setting but with bright vibrant colors makes the color loving minimlist in my nod in approval. Wifi is available on both floors of the shop as well.
First up of course as we would have it, everything was out of stock. Ok fine well not everything. My favourtie iljeolmi and mango were out. Strawberry were out and basically the good ones were out of stock. So looking at what else we had left to choose from, we ordered a Triple Berry Bingsu (RM 17.90).
Now despite how fancy and how new a Bingsu is, they always must have a few items which are essentials. It's like how you can't do ice kacanf without sirap bandung and evaporated milk. Similiarly, bingsu's have those items that make them essential as well such as ice cream on top, rice cakes, and of course, snow-like shaved ice that's fluffy and melts in your mouth. Some variations in korea that are common come with biscuits, wafer sticks, pockey's and condensed milk. Basically to make it the ultimate dessert.
The one im Bingsu cafe was far from ideal. It was mainly berries with flavoured ice and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Nothing else. Nothing to shout about. The bingsu in the KFC in korea did a better job and it cost less. It had nothing. It didn't have the rice cakes I loved so much. Sweet milk by the side, no cornflakes, nothing for a crunch factor, nothing.
If you think I'm being picky. My Korean friend (aha! See! I brought someone for credibility!) Just stared at me and said she probably could make a better one and it lacked many things.
So with that said, I guess the 100 yen shop shaved ice would probably be more worth it... and would cost less.
This wins hands down against Cafe bene (mehhhh) on their quality of bingsu as the ice is so so finely shaved compared to the coarse ice that is sold by the competitor. A minor complaint is that the vanilla ice cream is wayyyyy too sweet and too much of vanilla essence used that is kinda cloying towards the end. Nonetheless, will be back to try their iljeonmi & black sesame bingsu.
Visited during the mid-week where there was a buy two, free for the cheaper one. So the sweet tooth slash greedy me just had to order two (well it's free. So why not!) Triple Berry Bingsu was a favourite of the cashier, nice patient guy at the counter.
Mango cheesecake Bingsu was a pure indulgence, with snow like texture shaved ice with some milk and mango syrup with it. Cubed mangoes and cheesecakes (that can be bought by its slice at the counter) served on top and some lovely raisins that gave some delicious chewy sweetness. The cheesecake was a little too hard though. Crust was too hard to cut through. Cheesecake was at least manageable but still hard 😅 Triple berries Bingsu was sort of the lighter and "healthier" choice (but not really. Still loads of sugary stuff hidden in the shaved ice and syrup drizzled on top). It was indeed delicious. I'm glad I ordered both! Sweet blueberries and strawberries with vanilla ice cream. Simple and nice!
Personally prefer this then Cafe Bene.
Food: 9/10 Price: 8/10 (RM 17.90 for triple berries; RM 16.90 for mango cheesecake - free for my second order!)
The craze is kicking in, and more places serving bingsu are starting to pop up. It's not hard to understand why — it's a truly satisfying treat for our hot weather! Head over to the latest addition to the family, BingSu Cafe in Damansara Uptown (same row as Epicuro and POKC), to check out their irresistable bingsu options like Triple Berry and Black Sesame. Tastemaker Tracey Wong, who likes durian, says the Mango Durian Bingsu (RM18.90) is the best she has had so far! Durian lovers, you know where to go next.
I would say this is one of the best Bingsu noms I've had so far! Total love for this. Many might not like durian, or the mango-durian combination, at least for me.. I wasn't enthused. But, how awesome could it get to have the marriage of mango cubes, durian fillings with topped durian ice cream all in a bowl of smooth shaved ice?? I'd say the price (rm18.90) is quite reasonable, though might be pricier among other bingsu's out there. A must try here 👍
