Tokyo Gyuniku Don

$12.00 · 8 Reviews

Not that much more expensive than Yoshinoya, but you get incredible value in this bowl! Perfectly marinated slices of beef that are delightfully tender. The juice literally drips into the rice, coating it with flavor and every mouthful packs a punch. The portion of beef is super generous, and despite the bowl looking small, you are almost certain to be satiated when you reach the end of it.

Look at dat generous heap of beef tho. The onsen egg was runny which helped the don taste less dry, since it did not come with miso soup.

Tokyo Gyuniku Don (S$12)
Available at @TakumiSushiro by @SushiroSingapore
Tender slices of beef on top of plain rice, with an onsen egg in the centre.
Surprisingly the place was not packed when I visited during weekday lunch time whereas Sushiro had a queue.

This is Tokyo Gyuniku Don, beef over rice with onsen egg. What I like about it is the generous portion of beef. It was a mountain of beef on the rice bowl. What I do not like about it is that the rice was too wet because of too much sauce, and there was not much onions. Overall, it is a value-for-money beef bowl.
Cost: $12.90

Item: Tokyo Gyuniku Don
Damage: $12

Rice was soft and flavourful. Liked the balance of meat and onion. Flavour was alright, it wasn't too salty or anything for me. Overall it was nice but not impressive. Wouldn't travel there just for it.

This sister outlet to Sushiro has taken over Sushiro's old space since their move to a space nearer the entrance of Thomson Plaza. Takumi by Sushiro strictly serves hot Japanese rice bowls in this modest space (with a few extended tables at the adjacent stall), with only seven offerings on the menu. Go for the latest addition, Tokyo Gyuniku Don ($12), a beef bowl rather similar to Yoshinoya's Gyu Don. Thinly shaved stewed beef with tender onion strips are stacked to form a little hill atop of a bed of rice, with a crater on top that cradles a wobbly onsen egg — the apple of any meat lover's eye. For the ravenous, attempt the Mount Gyuniku Don ($22) that comes with twice the amount of rice and beef! Aside from beef bowls, Takumi also serves Shizuoka Unajyu Don ($18) with a thick slab of well-grilled unagi on rice, as well as the tasty Chicken Katsu Curry Udon ($13). Pro tip: Get the best of both worlds and takeaway Sushiro's famed Bara Chirashi Don ($12.80) to eat at Takumi — provided you order one of their bowls!

Cheers to Sushiro's expansion and allocation of its former space to Takumi that sells beef and grilled eel donburis. For first timers, I'd recommend you to visit the newly opened Sushiro (opp GNC) and try the popular Bara Chirashi Don and Glazed Duck Don. 👍

As for those who has a carnivorous diet, try this Tokyo Gyuniku Don ($12) or upsize to Mount Gyuniku Don ($22) for a mountain of tender and deeply marinated beef with a wobbly oozesome onsen egg. 😋 Maybe due to its overwhelmed popularity, the food standards were quite inconsistent compared to our previous visit.

We found the rice a tad too wet and soft which became mushy when the savoury beef sauce and runny egg seeps through to the bottom of the bowl. The beef was thinly shaved rather than sliced, imagine them thinner than those at Yoshinoya. 🙊 Nonetheless, it was still a decent bowl but I would return for Sushiro's other signatures.

Back to Thomson to visit Takumi by Sushiro which opens today at the former corner that Sushiro used to have occupied — this concept replicates the success behind Sushiro by offering affordable Gyudon to the masses; prices start at $12.00 for the Tokyo Gyuniku Don, while other items such as Shizuoka Unajyu Don (unagi served atop Japanese rice served in a box) and Chicken Katsu Curry Udon as well as a few others have their place in the menu.

For $12.00 nett, the portion was pretty good considering there is a balance of rice and beef one is getting; the beef all thinly sliced and delightfully tender and juicy without any hard-to-bite and comes lightly savoury without being noticeably gamey. The entire bowl also does not feel dry even after nearing the end of it, and the in between the rice and beef comes a layer of seaweed nori to help give a little more contrast in flavours. As usual, it comes with the onsen egg that is satisfyingly runny — mix it into the entire bowl for a silkier texture. Overall, a pretty comforting Bowl that I wouldn't mind having again; it would be hard to choose between Sushiro's Barachirashi Don and Takumi by Sushiro's Gyunikun Don the next time I decide to eat at Thomson Plaza.

PS: The Mount Gyuniku Don is priced at $22 nett and is essentially the Tokyo Gyuniku Don upsized with more beef; the Tokyo Gyuniku Don and Mount Gyuniku Don is similar in concept as Sushiro's Barachirashi Don and Premium Barachirashi Don; now you know.
