Oh my lord, came here on my off day and queued for 1hr for their fried rice but honestly felt there was nothing much to shout about. Don't get me wrong, their dishes were indeed delicious but was it worth queuing up for ๐Ÿค” I'd let you be the judge!

Using short grain rice for their carbs, they were really generous with their portion and despite it being a takeaway, my rice didn't clump up at all during the journey back home. Filling, affordable and tasty, their pork chop were juicy and succulent too, and paired nicely with the rice, completing the meal.

The Mala Fried Rice wasn't as spicy as I had expected it to be but still does carry a hint of mala fragrance on every bite. The prawns were perfectly cooked, achieving the crunchy texture I like, which also gave a better chew to this dish!

Definitely a worth contender to the hot fave from dtf in terms of price point, but itโ€™s lacking in terms of the eggy-ness of the fried rice. The marinate used for the cutlet is slightly different from dtfโ€™s.

Definitely worth a try if the queue is anything less than 15 mins. You might want to pass the prawn fried rice and go for the cutlet instead.

Full disclosure: Iโ€™ve never been to King of Fried Riceโ€™s flagship eatery in Golden Mile Tower because I could never be arsed to go that far. Beers & booze? Sure. Fried rice? Nah fam, pass. However, their second stall in Sengkang is a damn sight nearer to my home, so it was finally time to pass judgement on these fried rice merchants.โ €

The XO Fried Rice with pork chop was $6.80, which is about average for hawker alternatives to DTF (the Taiwanese xiao long bao restaurant, not the phrase to signify that youโ€™re done with No Nut November). I donโ€™t quite remember if Kingโ€™s competition used short grain Japanese rice, but that elevated Kingโ€™s XO fried rice. The felicitously fried rice was infused with a respectable amount of wok hei even though it could do with a little charring on the grains of glory.โ €
โ €
Thereโ€™s an abundance of eggy goodness in the chaos of carbs, which does tamper the umami of the XO sauce thatโ€™s been fried with the rice, resulting in fried rice thatโ€™s a little less satisfying than expected. What is most definitely satisfying is the pork chop. Itโ€™s been pounded thin, and tenderised with baking soda. โ €
โ €
Unlike many other places which leave the protein to tenderise for too long, King does it just right, producing pork thatโ€™s tastefully tender with a decent chew & resistance to it, instead of pork that feels like chewing a wet foam ball. The piece of porcine is seasoned satisfactorily, and it pairs quite well with the oily, mildly spicy fried chili.โ €

For $6.80, itโ€™s hard to get renditions of pork chop fried rice that are better than Kingโ€™s. Theyโ€™re rice royalty for good reason, and a certain orange polo shirted uncle would probably agree.

flavourful pork chop. egg fried rice not evenly coated but good enough. take a number, go run errands, and come back later to collect.

This shop has been the talk of the town (a while back) for creating ding tai fung standard egg fried rice for half the price. Did it live up to expectations? A big fat YES. Rice is flavourful and portion is generous. The only down side is that itโ€™s so popular the food takes 1h to come & this particular hawker center is quite hot & stuffy. Other than that, very worth a try ๐Ÿ‘
