Don't look past this hole-in-a-wall along bustling Telok Ayer Street. The toasties are excellent, like an Avocado Toastie ($8) that the Burpple community can't stop raving about – think creamy avo paired with pesto, feta and cheddar between toasty, fluffy bread. Also a must-try is the Chicken Meatball Pasta ($13) that sports al dente spaghetti in a light and creamy sauce with juicy and massive chicken meatballs. P.S. Look out for resident doggie Baileys here!

Rocking an alfresco courtyard, this swanky spot is perfect for chill weekends spent with a good friend (or a book). Expect elevated brunch plates, including a deceptively simple Grilled Cheese Toast with Tomato Bacon Soup ($11). On sweets, the fluffy and fragrant Earl Grey Pancakes ($16) with cookie crumbs and poached pear is a winner. Get also the dark and roasty Flat White ($5.50), complete with nutty notes.

The portion was large and love how the rice included those cripsy rice bits!!!

Having this beef teriyaki sandwich which consists of beef slices, egg yolk, signature sauce and teriyaki sauce. The egg yolk itself doesn’t add much flavour to the sandwich as the beef slices with onion and teriyaki sauce is quite strong in flavour already. The bread is fried with butter so it comes with a strong buttery smell too.

The filling is quite generous so I have the whole sandwich with beef slices. However, some slices are still too big considering it to be filled in the sandwich, which makes it a bit messy when you’re having it.

The light-coloured, minimalist interior brightened up our day chilling to their teas. Sitting by their counter watching the staff whisk and prepare the teas was a pleasant thing.
Of cos, their range of Matcha and Hojicha was attractive. Particularly loved their hot tea, served just at the right temperature, aromatic and comforting.
And gotta at least have a dessert that would go so well with the tea. The Goma and Matcha cakes were sold out and we took the Honey Earl Grey which was light and tasty. The Shiratama soy bean paste would appeal to anyone across the age groups. Smooth, warm and comforting; it was not so sweet the way we liked it.

From Martin Zwerts; a fries specialty stall situated at Holland Piazza hailing from Netherlands — the outlet being its very first outpost outside of Europe.

The Martin Zwerts Special is essentially a combination of two sauces — the Frites sauce and the Kerrie sauce that could also be ordered separately with their fried. The fries were served with a generous portion of sauce; still retaining substantial crispness despite doused in sauce whilst being well-filled — the fries were also chunky being thick-cut, while not overly seasoned. The Frites sauce is somewhat like a creamy but light mayo, while the Kerrie sauce is more of light, tangy and sweet sauce similar to BBQ sauce without the smokiness and intense savouriness; very manageable for the tastebud. To be frank; a pretty comforting eat on a rainy day.

From Hong Jjajang, a new Korean restaurant that took over a bridal studio along Tanjong Pagar Road that serves communal Korean dishes with a focus on Jjajangmyeon.

Going for one of the combination bowls, the Tangjjamyeon comes with sweet and sour pork alongside Jjajangmyeon — something I would recommend one to go for if they are heading there in a small group of two to three and want to try a variety of items without overstuffing themselves with the communal dishes. It is noted that the Jjajangmyeon here comes with a more savoury note amidst the sweetness of the caramalised black bean sauce than Obba Jjajang’s version (also situated along the same road); it also comes evidently meaty from the minced meat included with the onions within the sauce. The Tangsuyuk comes very bland on its own, though reasonably crisp on the exterior — dip it into the sweet and sour sauce provided on the side and the flavours come alive with the thick and gooey sauce that comes with cocktail fruits which enhances the sweetness further. Overall, worth a try!

Everybody, mee my new found love 💕 from curry rice to chirashi dons to ramen, you name it they have it. They’re only open for 2 weeks now. Didn’t get to try Five Ten previously, this has a similar concept with the menu going at $5/$10, but there are also items going at $15/$25.

The Lu Rou fan was pretty satisfying for a $10 lunch bowl - comes with sous vide egg and kailan that I hate which thankfully wasn’t too much. Drenched with a rather rich braised sauce made in-house, savoury with hints of spices. The pork belly itself was relatively melt-in-the-mouth tender and I thought it had a good proportion of fat but X found it a little too fatty😛

We went for Lemon & Herb for the flame grilled Portuguese chicken. Meat was ridiculously tender and has the smokey flavors of the grill. However, the chicken was way overly salty. Not sure what attributed to the high sodium, if it was the sauce or something else that they seasoned the meat with but definitely get some rice or chips to help lessen the blow. A drink would be great to wash it all down as well.

It comes with a dallop of mentaiko that you mix with the runny golden yolk. The accompanying seaweed shreds give it a touch of umami. The regular portion is actually quite sizable so unless you're a big eater, this is definitely a better choice. This is served hot, but would prefer it served cold and with wakame instead of nori.

Similar to the restaurants in Japan, Marugame operates in a self-service style where you choose the Udon before adding the tempura. The prawn is good but the Kakiage tempura was pretty oily

This was so so good! Here, the sashimi is served in thick, chunky cuts, so each piece feels really substantial unlike the thin feeble slices you get at other places. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and the salmon was so fatty that it just melts in your mouth. Not cheap, but definitely worth it for the occasional indulgence!
