This Mexican grocer may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of tacos, but if you’re in the area, you should absolutely pop by! Priced at $10 for three pork or chicken tacos ($12 for bistec), these babies come fully loaded with rice, refried beans and lotsa pulled meat doused in lip-smacking sauce — so flavourful it’ll be like a Cinco de Mayo party in your mouth!

OMB (short for Oh My Bacon!) prides itself on being all about bacon, and delightfully translates its passion and love for bacon through bacon-centric mains, desserts, drinks and even in-store merchandise. Go for the indulgent Bacon Bomb ($28) -- melted cheese, pork and beef wrapped with crispy bacon -- and the Bacon & Egg Cups ($12). For those with a sweet tooth, try the Jekyll & Hyde ($2.50 per piece, or $12 for 6 pieces), which are bacon strips dipped in dark and white chocolate!

Located at Satay by the Bay and owned by local artiste Felicia Chin, Wholly Crab is an affordable, casual seafood joint which sells and serves their seafood by the bucket. Customise your preferred fusion of Louisiana-style seafood with popular local flavours such as Kung Pow and Laksa, or go for an interesting twist like Marmite. There are two options — Love Bucket ($60) for 2-3 pax and Wholly Bucket ($120) for 5-6 pax. For add-ons, go for their signature Nori Tempura Soft Shell Crab ($12) for that added crunch!

Situated within the Park West Condominium at Clementi and helmed by Chef Patrick Heuberger (formerly from Le Bistrot Du Sommelier and Au Petit Salut), Casse-Croûte (pronounced "kras-krut") is a humble kitchen/café, which serves a selection of traditional and unique charcuterie as well as other French bistro fare. Go for their Duck Sausage with Foie Gras and Pistachio Nuts ($8.40 for 100g) and their Braised Lamb Meat Balls in Tomato Sauce ($16 for eight). For those who want a sweet finish, go for their Profiteroles with Vanilla Ice Cream ($12).

Let's just say that Joe's has become the Burpple team's absolute favourite Thai restaurant. This humble little Thai kitchen opened by Joe and Jamie in 2006 boasts super flavorful Tom Yum soup that has just the right amount of spice and tang, and big portions of juicy, fragrant pandan chicken for extremely reasonable prices. Spot the Burpple sticker on their front door!

Showcasing traditional wood-fired oven pizza (no gas chambers, here) made with an inherited secret recipe of pizza dough from one of the oldest pizzarias back in Italy, you know they’re serious about its food. A classic pizza consisting of three ingredients: tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil, the margherita pizza ($19.90) uses fresh buffalo mozzarella flown in three times a week from the volcanic region of Campania—where the cheese in the best Neopolitan pizzas are from. One bite is all it takes to know we’ve found the pizzeria in town.

Opened by the man behind Immanuel French Kitchen, chef-owner Immanuel Tee's newest stall focuses on charcoal-grilled food in a casual kopitiam setting. By The Fire is situated in Alibabar the Hawker Bar along East Coast Road, and dishes out all-time favourites like Grilled BBQ Pork Ribs ($14.90) Grilled Hanger Steak ($19) and Grilled Chicken Leg ($12.90), as well as unconventional fare like Scotch Eggs ($6.90). Also worth a try is the Squid Ink Pasta ($12.90), delightfully umami with sea urchin cream, topped with bonito flakes and chopped scallions. With no GST or service charge, this stall is one to look out for!

This spacious rooftop cafe situated on the 11th floor of Pico Creative Centre in Kallang not only has great panoramic views, but also serves tasty Peranakan food at a steal. Definitely go for their fantastic Nyonya Assam Pedas Fish ($6.50) — a generous portion of fresh fish lying in an addictive gravy that goes so perfectly with rice, and their incredibly flavourful Sambal Prawns with Petai ($6.50). They serve a variety of western dishes, brunch fare, coffee and cakes as well, but it's worthwhile to just focus on satisfying your Peranakan cravings here. A great place for cheap and tasty food, you'll be asking for more gravy please, and an extra plate of rice. What's more, no service charge or GST! Note that they are closed on weekends.

Among all the cakes and pastries, my favorite was the pop corn wrapped with a "newspaper". While watching the bartender doing their magic, I was at the front seat pop-ing them one after another!

Opening along Bukit Pasoh Road, Boca serves authentic Portugese fare in a warm, stylish setting. Be welcomed into the three-storey shophouse by flights of Andorinha (swallows) which commemorate the spirit of returning home, and make yourself comfrotable in this stylish, warm space. Order the Prato de Salgadinhos Mistos, which is their platter of petiscos (the Portugese equivalent of tapas) and go for the super-comforting Açorda de Bacalhau (congee-esque bread with salted cod), and the Chouriço em Chamas (chorizo flame-grilled in brandy). End the evening with the original Portuguese Egg Tart, served with a liberal sprinkling of cinnamon and icing sugar as they should be. Sounds like an amazing date night, no?

Sandwiched between Stateland Cafe and Honeycomb at Bali Lane, & Why is a New York-themed deli brought to you by the guys behind I Am Cafe along Haji Lane. Halal-certified and Muslim-run, & Why serves coffee, sandwiches, salads, mocktails, and selected bakes. Go for their Lobster Mobster ($16.90) — lobster chunks tossed with chopped celery and mayo, topped with arugula on bread -- and their indulgent Choc Rocher Cheesecake. End your meal with one of their decadent non-alcoholic mocktails such as the Mad About Dolce ($6.90) — you'd swear it tastes like it contains Baileys!

Joining the cluster of eateries opposite Sembawang Shopping Centre (which currently includes RoyceMary Cafe, Mootime and the famous Sembawang White Bee Hoon) is Baker's Brew Studio, a baking studio-cum-cafe concept. There is no partition between the baking kitchen and the seating area, so if you visit at the right time, you will get to observe the baking process and grab piping hot bakes fresh out of the oven! There is no fixed menu per se — the bakers let their creativity and inspiration dictate what rolls out daily. Past bakes include Earl Grey Lavender and Red Velvet cakes, Paddlepop and Japanese Cheesecakes, with many flavours yet to come. Try to catch their Raspberry Swirl and Carrot Cake!
