Maybe it’s the fresh tiger prawns that were a stark difference to the usually halved tiny (maybe mushy) prawns; maybe it’s the perfect balance of condiments and flavours, from the spicy chilli to the rich broth, umami-packed sakura ebi, and sweet lup cheong; or maybe it’s simply how I couldn’t seem to put the spoon down till the bowl was empty. I can’t really pin it down cause all I remember was snippets of “mm this is so good” while wolfing it all down 🤷🏻‍♀️

Definitely won’t be the first or last to say this, but Izy Fook’s roasted meats is uh-maaaaazing. Period. Roast pork is well-seasoned, tasty and tender, with a good sliver of luscious melt-in-your-mouth fat and a cap of fabulously crunchy crackling. And the char siew, ooooh. Fantastically charred edges (I adore the black bits), a sticky sweet, caramel-y glaze, and such juicy meat!

The price was what got us leaning to this dish, though in hindsight you really do get what you pay for 🤔 Skin was nicely golden and crisp, but pull that apart and the meat was depressingly dry and tough, worlds apart from that luscious melt-in-the-mouth texture we were expecting. The mash was passable, sauce well-seasoned, poached pears oddly cold...to put it short I found it lacklustre.

The 24-hour sous vide Black Angus Short Rib was tender and juicy indeed; but let’s be honest: there are quite a handful of restaurants out there that do this well, and with a $78 price tag it’s not the most attractively priced. What really made this dish for me though, was the tomato relish that came with. I can’t remember what exactly went into it, but all that really matters was the smoky fragrance that’s complemented with a nice balance of savoury and sweet.

If you can’t tell just from the photo, let me assure you it’s MASSIVE. Easily feeding 4, you get a 500g spiral pork sausage, half a Sakura spring chicken, pulled pork mac and cheese, 200g bavette, 250g secreto pork, sides of grilled veggies, babaganoush, house-cured item, sourdough and sauces. Phew that was quite the mouthful! Of these, the unanimous fave was the chicken: unbelievably moist, tender, and so so flavourful, I can’t imagine how long they brined their meat!

So timeless, so easy to recreate, yet nonetheless satisfying, I’ve never been able to say no to the classic baked Camembert. Bedrock’s comes with a topping of tangy fried capers and some bread crisps at the side, making seriously the perfect starter to dinner. There’s nothing much I can add on cause it really is the type of dish that should be kept as straightforward and plain as possible lol, but I can promise that if you like your cheeses, you’d love this as I did.

A crunchy taco shell filled with spicy fatty tuna, avocado, tomato, onions, and lettuce, I expected quite a lot from Tanuki Raw’s Negitoro Herumetto ($14). Yet...aside from the interesting ‘taco shell’ (essentially tempura-ed nori sheets as far as I can tell), the flavours in all were downright disappointing. The lettuce wasn’t entirely dry and held pockets of water; wee drizzle of spicy sauce too little to support the tasteless unseasoned tuna; and I really don’t get why cheap Kraft-like processed cheese is used for this — it clashes with the spicy sauce, does nothing to support the tuna, and really just stands out like a sore thumb.

I was honestly a little apprehensive but decided I might as well just try it, even if it's just for the gram; so I was genuinely taken back by how much I enjoyed this! First off, the roasted soy and brown butter taiyakis buns were STELLAR on their own. So thin, yet fluffy and oh-so-tasty, you could honestly eat them plain and still feel mega satisfied. Great that the filling lived up to the buns then, with thinly sliced US primed beef, savoury sautéed onions, and some crunchy clean lettuce lending a whole lotta flavour. If anything, I wish the sauce on the beef wasn't that sweet, masking the meat itself, and that the beef was leaner so there'll be a meatier, chunkier texture. If you like your meats fatty though you'd love this for sure.

It's not one for the purists that I assure you; Sumo Bar Happy's tonkotsu broth's unlike any I've tried elsewhere: it's thicker, richer if possible, shockingly akin to that of Taiwan's 牛肉面. Noodles are cooked 👌🏻 though a tad on the soft side, mix that up with the rich broth, spicy house-marinated beansprouts, toasted seaweed, black fungus, and mmmm epic beyond words. And...free-flow ramen eggs?! Awww man 😍 I tried both the Sumo ($23) and the Oxtail ($21), and though both are very generous with the meats and ingredients, I'd say go for the former so you can have a little of everything.

Instead of having them plain, we got the Smoked Brisket Biscuits ($20 for 2), which if I may say makes for an excellent starter. The biscuits: lightly-sweetened, crisp on the outside, super fluffy, and buttery as hell. I liked how the housemade BBQ sauce coating the brisket isn't too sweet like the commercial ones, complementing the meat without overpowering it all. Only thing is, the brisket's oddly sliced thinly (almost like shabu meats) so you don't quite get as much of that shiok smokiness as expected of brisket. Would've liked to really get a hit if that savoury smokiness, but otherwise this is really worth a try.

Pork Ribs ($10) and Grilled Squid ($10) — among the 2 that most impressed during today's lunch. The former was mad tasty, not simply coated in a sticky Hoisin sauce but having all that lovely savoury-sweet flavours seep into the meat, while staying utterly moist and juicy. If anything it was too fatty for me, but I'm sure that wouldn't be an issue to most. As for the squid: smokey, wonderfully charred, perfectly cooked. 'Nuff said. Then again with so many trusted Burpple Tastemakers giving their thumbs up to FIVE TEN, I wouldn't expect anything less.

Spending all my time eating (and eating) cause what else is there to do in small 🌞🌞 Singapore?
