Brewlander is probably my favorite homegrown Singaporean SME right now (no prizes for guessing why), and absolute national treasures such as their Courage Double IPA (DIPA) will only boost their IPO value.

It’s brewed in Cambodia (booooo! What happened to #supportlocal?), but it’s still technically Singaporean. Just like Singapore, it’s deceivingly diminutive and unassuming, but it will kick your ass with its 8.2% ABV if you mess with it.

Why do I say that it’s unassuming? Well, the Brewlander Courage doesn’t taste like an IPA at all, let alone a DIPA. The wild hoppiness which characterizes an IPA that I eventually got sick of is absent, and it’s actually quite restrained. It smells of orange and a bit of lemon zest, and the taste says orange, lemon, honey and a mild suggestion of hops.

Better yet, it’s moderately carbonated, and it won’t turn you into a German Gasbag. Which means that you don’t stop til’ you get enough, and it’s pretty hard to get enough of Singapore’s star export.

So, go ahead, grab some liquid Courage, and go chat up that attractive lady over there. You’ll do fine, my friend.


And welcome the Yeastie Boys with their latest hit, Pot Kettle Black! This porter wafts with aromas of coffee and toffee, and tastes pretty much the same, albeit with the addition of strong, sweet malt and trace of caramel. It's as black as my heart and has the bitter finish to prove it, but it's still a charmingly chuggable brew.

The tables around Smith Street Taps tends to get pretty lit especially on Saturdays, and it gets wilder as the night gets deeper. Take a risk as well as a sip of liquid courage before taking the plunge to join in the festivities!


Amager's Dark Overlord imperial stout sounds incredibly imposing, but it's just a front for its real sticky sweet nature. After letting it warm up, it smelled of roasted malts, coffee and a whole lotta alcohol.

As for the taste itself, the sweetness nearly overwhelms your senses, restrained only by the equally strong waves of bitterness pulling the other way on the flavor spectrum. It took a few swigs before I managed to pick out the notes of coffee and roasted malt, and another flavor I couldn't quite place due to the overwhelming sweetness. It's smooth, slightly oily, full bodied and has a very creamy mouthfeel from start to finish.

Fortunately, the booze maestros at Smith Street Taps served it up in a half pint glass, otherwise I would've had one heck of a time trying to finish this pint off due to the sharp contrast of the cloying sweetness dueling with the equally forceful bitterness of the stout. This was one of the few brews I found myself incapable of chugging down, aided by the fact that this is quite possibly the thickest and stickiest brew I've had so far. A better beer buff than I can probably properly appreciate the Dark Overlord, but this boy didn't quite agree with this brew.
